1. World Population Day is observed on July 11

World Population day is an annual event, observed on July 11 every year, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987.

World Population Day aims to increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights.

2. Akshay Kumar only Indian in Forbes Highest-Paid Entertainers List

With $65 million (₹444 crore), Akshay Kumar has become the only Indian to enter Forbes magazine’s Highest-Paid Entertainers List 2019. The magazine wrote that he earns at least $5 million (₹34 crore) and up to $10 million (₹68 crore) per film, along with earnings from endorsements. Akshay, who came 33rd, beat Hollywood actors including Chris Evans and Bradley Cooper.

3. Indian weightlifters win 7 golds at Commonwealth C’ships on day 2

Indian weightlifters Rakhi Halder and Davinder Kaur won a gold medal each in the senior women’s section on the second day of Commonwealth Championships on Wednesday. Kaur lifted a total of 184kg to win the women’s 59kg gold while Halder clinched the yellow metal in the 64kg category. India also won five other gold medals in junior and youth sections.

4. Sunil Chhetri and Ashalata Devi bag top honours at AIFF Awards

Indian men’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri and women’s footballer Ashalata Devi bagged the top honours at the All India Football Federation’s AIFF Awards on Tuesday.

Chhetri was named the men’s footballer of the year, while the title in the women’s category was won by Devi.

5. Russia launches Soyuz carrier rocket with 33 satellites

Russia’s carrier rocket launch: Russia successfully launched its Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket on Friday with a hydrometeorological satellite and 32 small satellites, the Russian state space corporation Roscosmos said. The rocket blasted off at 8.41 a.m. (local time) from the Vostochny spaceport in the Far Eastern Amur Region, it said in a statement.

6. Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts cross Rs 1 lakh crore

Deposits in bank accounts opened under Jan Dhan scheme, launched about five years ago by the Modi-government, have crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark. As per the latest finance ministry data, the total balance in over 36.06 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts was at Rs 1,00,495.94 crore as on July 3.

7. Walmart Labs acquihires Indian startups FloCare and BigTrade

Walmart Labs, the technology arm of the US retail giant Walmart, has bought two Bengaluru-based startups to strengthen its customer service systems. The company acqui-hired healthtech startup FloCare and B2B wholesale trading platform BigTrade for undisclosed sums.

8. Cabinet approves bill to merge 13 central labour laws into single code

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a bill that seeks to merge 13 central labour laws into a single code which would apply on all establishments employing 10 or more workers.

The proposed Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Bill, 2019, would enhance the coverage of workers manifold, an official release said.

9. MoU signed between Ministry of Defence and NRDC to boost Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti

To give a boost to Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Intellectual Property Facilitation Cell (IPFC), Ministry of Defence (MoD) and National Research Development Corporation (NRDC). Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti was launched last year with the aim to inculcate IP culture in Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem.

10. Swadhar Greh Scheme Implemented

The Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing the Swadhar Greh Scheme for rehabilitation of women in difficult circumstances. The scheme covers women who are deserted and without any social and economic support, women victims of domestic violence, family tension and natural disaster. Ministry is also implementing Universalisation of Women Helpline Scheme which is envisaged to provide 24 hours emergency and non-emergency response to women affected by violence.
