  1. 2 Indian-Americans to be honoured with Great Immigrants award

Two Indian-Americans, Adobe Chief Shantanu Narayen and former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy are among 38 immigrants to be honoured this year for their role in helping advance the country’s society, culture and economy.

Narayen and Murthy will be honoured with the prestigious ‘Great Immigrants’ annual award on US’s Independence day on 04th July 2017. Murthy, born in the UK and a Harvard and Yale alumnus, was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2014, becoming the first-ever Indian-American to occupy the post and also the youngest ever surgeon general of the country. Narayen, a native of Hyderabad has an undergraduate degree in electronics engineering, a master’s degree in computer science, and an MBA from UC Berkeley.

  1. New chiefs of 2 PSU banks take charge

Union Bank of India said Rajkiran Rai G has assumed charge as Managing Director & CEO.  Prior to his elevation as MD & CEO of Union Bank of India, Rai was Executive Director of Oriental Bank of Commerce. He started his career in 1986 as an Agricultural Finance Officer in Central Bank of India.

Melwyn Rego has assumed charge as Managing Director & CEO of Syndicate Bank. Prior to joining Syndicate Bank, Rego was MD & CEO of Bank of India. He started his career with IDBI Bank Ltd in 1984 and rose to the position of Deputy Managing Director.

  1. Shamma Jain appointed Indian envoy to Greece

Senior diplomat Shamma Jain was appointed as India’s ambassador to Greece.  A 1983-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Jain is currently serving as Indian envoy to Panama. She has also served in Indian missions in Italy, the Philippines, Washington DC, Turkey and Argentina.

  1. Infosys appoints TVS Capital’s Sundaram as independent director

Infosys has appointed D Sundaram as an independent director on the board of the company. Sundaram will be the fourth independent director to join India’s second largest software exporter since chief executive Vishal Sikka took over three years ago. His role would be effective from July 14.

Sundaram is currently vice chairman and managing director of TVS Capital Funds Ltd. His decorated CV includes various leadership capacities in Unilever Group since 1975, including Director of Finance & IT and Vice Chairman of Hindustan Unilever Limited.

  1. EC launches special drive to enroll left out voters

maximisation of registration of eligible electors with the focus on left out eligible young citizens in the age group of 18-19. During the drive, the EC will remove names of registered dead electors, if any, from electoral rolls.

During the month of June, the election officials have completed preparatory work like identification of critical gaps in existing electoral rolls, strengthening of infrastructure and sensitization of ground level electoral machine. The EC has also sent the communication to all recognised political parties seeking their cooperation for the success of the Special Drive.

  1. BHEL Signs Pact With Japanese Firm For Manufacturing Coaches For Metro Trains

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has entered into a technology collaboration agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd (KHI) of Japan for manufacturing of stainless steel coaches and bogies for metros. The agreement covers establishing design, engineering and manufacturing facilities at BHEL using Japanese technology. It will also entitle BHEL for all technological advances and upgrades.

BHEL supplies electric as well as diesel locomotives, EMUs, and propulsion systems for Indian Railways. Kawasaki Heavy Industries manufactures heavy equipment/products and its Rolling Stock Company has supplied EMU (Metro/Commuter) train sets to various countries like US, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong etc., besides Japan.

  1. India Contributes $500,000 To UN Peacebuilding Fund

India has contributed $500,000 to the UN Peacebuilding Fund, expressing hope that more funding by nations will boost efforts by the world body to build and sustain peace. India has been a member of the Peacebuilding Commission since its inception in December 2005 and has so far contributed $5 million to the Peacebuilding Fund. The fresh contribution of $500,000 to the fund will be affected over the coming days. The fund was launched to support activities, actions, programmes and organisations that seek to build a lasting peace in countries emerging from conflict.

  1. Svatantra Microfin launches cashless solution ‘Saathi’

Mid-sized microfinance institution Svatantra Microfin is looking at doubling its loan disbursals to ₹800 crore by 2019, even as it plans to expand its operations to more States within the same period. The firm, founded and promoted by Ananya Birla in 2012, has so far disbursed micro-credits worth ₹450 crore. Its loan book stands at ₹260 crore, and it has grown 220 per cent year-on-year since its launch in 2014.

Svatantra has also launched an app, an end-to-end cashless solution called Saathi, for an entire spectrum of operations in areas such as loan originating system, loan management system and collections. In partnership with third-party service providers, it has also created a affordable, cashless mediclaim product for up to five family members. The company, which started with just one branch at Wada in Maharashtra, currently has about 85 branches in six States.

National Doctors day in India is a big awareness campaign offering great opportunities to all to get aware about the roles, importance and responsibilities of the doctors as well as promote medical professionals to come closer and follow the responsibilities of their profession very dedicatedly.

This day is celebrated in the memory of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy in order to pay honour to the entire medical profession. Doctor’s Day in India was established by the Government of India in 1991 to be recognised and celebrated every year on 1st of July as National Doctors day.

  1. ADB pledges USD 10 bn for development projects in India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) today committed USD 10 billion supports for infrastructure building and immediate development needs of less-developed states in the country. Besides, the Manila-based multi-lateral funding agency decided to increase the annual funding by USD 1 billion to USD 4 billion.

ADB expects India to grow by 7.4 per cent in the current financial year and 7.6 per cent in 2018-19. The funding agency is prepared to invest up to USD 5 billion during 2018-2022 for infrastructure building to develop the East Coast Economic Corridor. Nakaopraised progress on attracting investments in manufacturing industries in the Corridor. President of Asian Development Bank is Takehiko Nakao.

  1. Mizoram celebrates 31st anniversary of Mizo peace accord

The 31st anniversary of the signing of the historic Mizo peace accord between the Union government and the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF) was celebrated in Mizoram. All government offices and educational institutions remained closed as the day was declared a public holiday.

The Mizo Accord was signed on June 30, 1986 ushering in an era of peace after 20 years of violence and disturbance in the state.

  1. German Parliament Approves Same-Sex Marriage

The lower house of the German Parliament voted to legalize same-sex marriage after a brisk but emotional debate.The historic decision came with a swiftness rare in Germany’s usually staid politics, just five days after Chancellor Angela Merkel unexpectedly relaxed her party’s opposition to same-sex marriage and allowed lawmakers to vote on the issue according to their consciences. Germany will join Ireland, France, Spain and other nations in extending full marital rights to same-sex couples, including the right to adopt children.

  1. China Is Building The World’s 1st Vertical ‘Forest City’ To Help Clean Up Its Pollution Problem

After China’s Nanjing city became the first Asian city to be getting a vertical forest (by 2018), China is building a forest city – Liuzhou Forest City – which will boast urban settlements and vertical forests. And, this will help curb pollution by leaps and bounds.

Liuzhou Forest City will be built north of Liuzhou in the south and the mountainous province of Guangxi, an area of about 175 hectares along the Liujiang River. The new city of 30,000 inhabitants will be able each year to absorb about 10,000 tons of CO2 and 57 tons of particulate matter and to produce about 900 tons of oxygen.

  1. Reliance Jio launches AAE-1, world’s longest 100Gbps submarine cable system

Reliance Jio has launched the Asia-Africa-Europe (AAE-1) submarine cable system. The company claims that it is the world’s longest 100Gbps technology-based submarine system and will stretch for over 25,000km from Marseille, France to Hong Kong. It will have 21 cable landings across Asia and Europe.

The project is a combination of leading telecom service providers from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It will feature diversified Points of Presence (PoP) in Asia (Hong Kong and Singapore), with three onward connectivity options in Europe (France, Italy and Greece).

  1. NASA Rocket Launch Creates Colorful Clouds Seen Across the East Coast

NASA deployed a rocket early  morning that created colorful clouds out of vapor in the Earth’s upper atmosphere over the East Coast. Completed at 4:25 a.m. from the Wallops location on Chincoteague Island, NASA successfully launched its Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket — after 11 recent unsuccessful attempts. The launch tested a new multi-canister ejection system used for deploying vapors, according to NASA.  The colorful vapors could be seen from New York to North Carolina.
