1. Quinton de Kock announces retirement from Test cricket

South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect late. His announcement came just hours after South Africa’s 113-run defeat to India in the first Test of the three-match series.

2. NewZealand’s Ross Taylor announces retirement from international cricket

Veteran New Zealand batter, Ross Taylor has announced retirement from international cricket at the end of the ongoing domestic season.

Taylor hence will play his final appearance in the second Test against Bangladesh, where will equal Daniel Vettori’s record of 112 tests for New Zealand.

He will be part of the one-day international series in Australia. He is the first cricketer to play more than 100 matches for New Zealand in all 3 formats.

3. SBI to acquire 9.95% stake in GIFT-IFSC-based Clearing Corp

State Bank of India will acquire up to 9.95 per cent stake in India International Clearing Corporation (IFSC) Ltd subject to a maximum investment of Rs 34.03 crore.

The Clearing Corporation is a GIFT City (Gandhinagar, Gujarat) based Market Infrastructure Institution (MII).

The Corporation is the first international clearing corporation to be set up at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

4. January 1: DRDO Foundation Day

64th foundation day of “Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)” was celebrated on January 1, 2022. In 63 years, DRDO has transformed the landscape of defence research and development in India.

DRDO also played a significant role in fighting against COVID-19 pandemic. It set up around 850 oxygen plants and Covid hospitals with the help from PM CARES Fund. It also developed a medicine named 2DG, to fight covid-19.

5. Under 19 Asia Cup winner: India beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets to win U-19 Asia Cup

India beat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets to lift the under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai on December 31, 2021 in a rain-interrupted final. India under the leadership of Yash Dhull won through the Duckworth Lewis method (DLS) as the match was reduced to 38 overs due to rain interruption.

6. KL Rahul named India’s captain for ODI series against South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah named deputy

KL Rahul has been named as India’s captain for its upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa and Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the deputy captain.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement while announcing India’s ODI squad for South Africa tour on December 31, 2021.

7. VK Tripathi appointed chairman and CEO of Railway Board

The Indian Railways has appointed VK Tripathi as chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board. He is currently working as the general manager of North-Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur.

Tripathi’s appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and he is currently General Manager, North-Eastern Railway. He will replace Suneet Sharma, a 1982 batch IRSME officer.

8. Uttarakhand govt hikes old-age, widow pension from ₹1,200 to ₹1,400

The Uttarakhand government increased the old-age pension and widow pension from ₹1200 to ₹1400. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting.

The Pushkar Singh Dhami-led government, in the cabinet meeting, also decided to give maternity leave to the guest female teachers.

9. Sanjay Kumar Singh assumes charge as Secretary, Ministry of Steel

Senior bureaucrat Sanjay Kumar Singh has been appointed as Steel Secretary as part of a major top-level bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre.

Singh, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) and Department of Pensions & Pensioners Welfare (DoPPW).

10. Japan launches Inmarsat-6 F1 Communications Satellite

Japan has launched Inmarsat-6 F1, a communication satellite, through a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) H-IIA204 rocket from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center that will enter geostationary orbit, about 22,240 miles (35,790 kilometres) above the earth.

It is developed by the London-based company Inmarsat as a part of its next-generation satellite broadband service. The satellite is 12,060-pound (5,470 kilograms) and is the first of two ‘I-6’ spacecraft.

11. Vinod Kannan takes over as CEO of Vistara

Vistara has announced that Vinod Kannan took over as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the airline.

“Kannan started his stint with Vistara as the Chief Strategy Officer in June 2019 and took over as Chief Commercial Officer in January 2020,” the company said. Kannan replaced Leslie Thng who was the CEO from July 2017 to December 2021.
