1. World Unani Day 2024 is observed on February 11

Hakim Ajmal Khan was a prominent figure in Unani medicine and a visionary who gave birth on February 11, which is why every year on that date, people worldwide commemorate World Unani Day.

One of the world’s oldest healthcare systems, Unani has its roots in Greece and has since evolved in South Asia and the Middle East. Today is a day to bring attention to this ancient practice.

World Unani Day is a great opportunity to recognize the value of traditional medicine and its role in modern healthcare, as well as its potential to improve people’s health and provide long-term solutions to healthcare issues worldwide.

Prior Knowledge

Greek medical giants like Hippocrates and Galen laid the groundwork for what is now known as Greco-Arab medicine, another name for the Unani medical system.

Avicenna (Ibn Sina), a scholar from the Arab world and Persia made substantial theoretical and practical contributions to it through his writings during the Middle Ages.

This system blended with Indian traditional medicine and practices once it came to India in the 12th century and flourished under the patronage of the Mughal Empire.

2. Veteran artist A Ramachandran Passes Away in Delhi

Ramachandran died in Delhi at the age of 88 on February 10, 2024, leaving behind one of the most distinctive voices in the art world.

An Introduction and a Trip to Santiniketan

A Ramachandran’s encounter with Ramkinkar Baij’s classic sculpture, Santhal Family, was the fortunate catalyst that launched his artistic career. He was born in Attingal, Kerala.

As a result, he received a scholarship to attend Santiniketan to study under the illuminating tutelage of revered figures like Ramkinkar Baij and Benode Behari Mukherjee.

Ramachandran was introduced to Rabindranath Tagore’s beliefs and a style of creative expression that prioritized freedom and creativity at this place.

The Shift from Anger to Joy in Artistic Development

The anguish and suffering that Ramachandran saw upon his arrival in post-Partition Kolkata informed his early works, which displayed a clear grasp of the social and political upheaval of his time.

Works like Kali Puja and End of Yadavas, which were composed at this time, painted a picture of a violent and hopeless society.

However the communal riots and other turbulent events in Delhi in the 1980s prompted a sea change in his life.

Inspired by the lush landscapes and temple art of Kerala and the humanistic principles of Santiniketan, Ramachandran started to reject pictures of disaster in favor of ones that praised life and the natural world.
