1. International Day of Women and Girls in Science
In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/212 declaring 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
2. World Unani Day observed on february 11
World Unani Day is a global event taking place every year on February, 11th, which is the birthday of great Unani scholar and social reformer “Hakim Ajmal Khan”.
The main objective of the celebration of said event is to pay tribute to the legendary for his wonderful contribution in the sustained development of Unani system of medicine in the country and rest of the world and to spread the awareness in masses and action about healthcare delivery through Unani system of medicine worldwide through its preventive and curative philosophy.
3. Mumbai, Kolkata see highest women, child trafficking cases: NCRB study
The highest incidence of children and women being trafficked were observed from the cities of Mumbai and Kolkata, according to the latest study by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The data on missing children and women was compiled on the directions of the Supreme Court.
In 2011, the SC constituted a panel which submitted its report in 2019. The panel has asked the apex court to direct the NCRB to compile data on missing children and women to identify the areas prone to trafficking.
4. Karen Pierce appointed first female British ambassador to US
Dame Karen Pierce, the UK’s permanent representative to the UN, has been appointed Britain’s ambassador to Washington, becoming the first woman to hold the position – the most prominent in the diplomatic service.
Pierce, a career diplomat who joined the Foreign Office in 1981, faces an arduous task to restore frayed relations with Donald Trump’s administration after the previous ambassador, Kim Darroch, felt forced to resign over leaked cables that revealed he made uncomplimentary personal remarks about the US president.
5. Top US officials to address India-focused meet in Washington
Reflecting the new Indo-US bonhomie, the White House has lined up its top officials, including the all-powerful Jared Kushner, for a India-centric business conference here this week.
The move comes close on the heels of the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Japan last month.
6. Andhra Pradesh gets its first Disha Police station
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy inaugurated Disha police station in Rajamahendravaram city to address heinous crimes against women and children in Andhra Pradesh. He also launched the Disha app to help women in distress, and demonstrated how women can send SOS through the app which will alert the nearest police vehicle.
7. NIFM, Faridabad renamed ‘Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management’
The Centre has decided to rename the National Institute of Financial Management (NIFM), Faridabad, as ‘Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management’ (AJNIFM).
NIFM, Faridabad was set up in 1993 as a registered society under the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, with the mandate to train officers of various finance and accounts services recruited by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through the Civil Services Examination.
8. Pullela Gopichand becomes first Indian to receive IOC’s ‘honourable mention’
Top Indian badminton coach, Pullela Gopichand was awarded an “honourable mention” at the IOC Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards 2019 for his excellence and contribution in the field of coaching.
Gopichand received the mention in the male category of the awards. He is the first-ever Indian to receive the prestigious honour.
9. Armand Duplantis sets pole vault world record in Poland
European champion Armand Duplantis set a pole vault world record at a World Athletics Indoor Tour meeting. The USA-born Swede, 20, cleared 6.17m at the second attempt in Torun, Poland, to beat Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie’s previous mark.
10. Aditya Mehta triumphs Pankaj Advani
Ace cuiest Aditya Mehta defeated multiple-time world champion Pankaj Advani 6-2 to win the National Snooker Championship here.
Mehta, who represented the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) in the clash, started off with a bang after wining the first frame with a break of 103 while the score remained 103-17.
11. United Nations World Pulses Day celebrated in New Delhi
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare inaugurated the celebrations of World Pulses Day in New Delhi that aims to increase the production of pulses.
12. Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 won by Bangladesh for the first time
Bangladesh won Under 19 Cricket World Cup organized by International Cricket Cup (ICC). Bangladesh won the title for the first time in its history. The tournament was held in South Africa between January 17, 2020 and February 9, 2020.
13. Ajeya Warrior: India-UK to hold joint military exercise
India-UK hold joint exercise called Ajeya Warrior on February 13, 2020. The exercise is being held from 2005. Around 120 soldiers are to participate in the exercise. This is the fifth edition of the exercise. The countries will hold the exercise in Salisbury Plains.
14. First Jerusalem-Mumbai festival held in Mumbai
The Jerusalem-Mumbai festival is to be held in Mumbai on February 15, 2020 to promote artistic and cultural ties between Israel and India. The festival is first of its kind. The main aim of the festival is to promote cooperation between the countries in the field of music, culinary art and dance.
