1. ADB Appoints Mio Oka as New Country Director for India
Mio Oka will replace Takeo Konishi as the Country Director for India at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the bank stated.
Ms. Oka has been in her current position for about 30 years, and she has worked with ADB for more than 18 of those years.
Appointing her is a major step forward in the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) ongoing collaboration with India to help achieve its development objectives and boost its economy.
Important Tasks
Ms. Oka’s responsibilities as the new Country Director of ADB in India include leading the organization’s operations there and cultivating relationships with the Indian government and other relief organizations.
She will be in charge of putting the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) country partnership strategy into action in India, which aims to spur inclusive, private sector-led growth that is resilient to climate change.
Rapid structural change, environmentally friendly development that can withstand the effects of climate change, and more economic and social inclusion are the goals of this plan for India.
Extensive Experience and Education
Ms. Oka is a Japanese national with an extensive background in project management and development financing. Since 2005, she has held multiple positions at ADB, such as director for the agricultural and natural resources sector and counselor to the president.
She gained experience in the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s Bangladesh Office before joining ADB.
Ms. Oka has a bachelor’s degree in development studies and politics from the University of London and a master’s degree in social policy and planning in developing nations from the London School of Economics.
2. India maintains its top spot as a leading source market for Sri Lanka tourism
India maintains the top spot as the leading source market for Sri Lankan tourism. With the arrival of 34,399 Indian tourists into the island nation, there has been a surge of tourists coming into Sri Lanka as compared to last year.
Seeing a 103 per cent year-on-year change the tourist arrivals for January stood at over 2.08 lakhs as per the data released by Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
The connectivity between India and Sri Lanka has improved recently as flight services resumed in 2022 between Chennai and Jaffna in addition to other sectors.
A ferry service between Kankesanthurai and Nagapattinam also has improved travel between the two countries that have connected through centuries.
Tourism holds a pivotal position in Sri Lanka’s economy as a top foreign revenue source. Tourism contributed 2.1 billion USD in the previous year.
3. Justice Vijay Bishnoi Appointed As Chief Justice Of Gauhati High Court
At a watershed moment in his stellar career as a lawyer, Justice Vijay Bishnoi was recently sworn in as Chief Justice of the prestigious Gauhati High Court.
The ceremony recognized Justice Bishnoi’s elevation to this respected post and was attended by luminaries such as the Chief Minister and Governor of Assam.
The Oath-Taking Ritual
At the oath-taking ceremony that took place at Raj Bhavan, Justice Vijay Bishnoi was sworn in by the Assam Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria.
The event was made more splendid by the participation of prominent guests, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
The Collegium of the Supreme Court’s Recommended Action
The recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium for Justice Bishnoi’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court is a testament to his honesty and judicial acumen. Justice Sandeep Mehta’s promotion to the Supreme Court created the opening, highlighting the importance of Justice Bishnoi’s selection all the more.
4. International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation
The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is observed on 6 February. The day seeks to raise awareness on ending the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).
Background
Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves altering or injuring female genitalia for non-medical reasons.
Over 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone this painful and shocking procedure that causes short-term health issues like infections and difficulty urinating, and long-term sexual, reproductive, and mental health problems.
Though concentrated largely in 30 African and Middle Eastern countries, FGM persists globally including in some Asian and Latin American countries and amongst immigrant populations in the West.
After decades of decline, COVID-19 disruptions threaten recent progress as over 12,000 girls daily remain at risk of this human rights violation.
2024 Theme – Her Voice Her Future
This year’s theme is “Her Voice. Her Future. The day calls to amplify and direct elimination efforts by prioritizing survivor-led initiatives for empowerment, agency, and access to services.
With just 7 years left, targeted, concerted support for survivors is urgently needed to achieve the 2030 target, as every survivor’s voice and every choice they make in reclaiming their lives contributes to ending FGM.
