1. The 2nd Nagaland Honey Bee Day was celebrated on 5 December

The 2nd Nagaland Honey Bee Day was celebrated on 5 December 2019 at the Heritage, Old DC Bungalow, Kohima, Nagaland. It aims to give more effort to continue on mission for more production of honey and to make Nagaland a Honey destination. Theme: The theme of the Honey Bee Day is Save Bee Save Life.

2. K Vijay Kumar is appointed as a Senior Security Advisor in the Home Ministry

K Vijay Kumar is appointed as a Senior Security Advisor in the Union Home Ministry. He will be advising the Home Ministry headed by Amit Shah on security-related matters of Union Territory of JK and Left Wing Extremism (LWE).

3. Civil Defence Day is observed on 6 December

Civil Defence Day is celebrated on 6 December 2019 in India. Day is observed every year. The day aims to make aware of the citizens and highlight the importance of Civil Defence.

Civil Defence being a voluntary Organisation. It acts as a protector to the civilian population during the crisis. The Civil Defence and Home Guards are the twin Voluntary organizations for the cause of defence to the nation. These organizations are based on the concept of safety of the common man.

4. Exercise Indra: Joint tri service Exercise between India and Russia

The Joint tri service exercise between India and Russia, INDRA 2019 is to be held between December 10-19, 2019 in Pune. The event is planned for 10 days between army, naval and air force forces of both the countries.

5. Meteor missiles: India asks for early delivery from France

India has requested for an early delivery of Meteor air-to-air missiles from France. These missiles will provide India the power to take on US supplied AMRAAM missiles possessed by the Pakistan Air Force.

6. Priyanka Chopra conferred with UNICEF’s Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award

Priyanka Chopra recently received the UNICEF’s Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award for her service as the organisation’s Goodwill Ambassador. Priyanka Chopra has been associated with UNICEF for the past 15 years as a Goodwill Ambassador. The award was announced in June 2019 and Priyanka was nominated for the award by the United Nations Children’s Fund.

• Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award is named after actor Danny Kaye. He was an American actor, dancer, and singer.
• He became the first goodwill ambassador of UNICEF in 1954. He was awarded Honorary Oscar for the film about his work with UNICEF.
• He helped the UNICEF to popularize through public announcements, interviews, and campaigns.

7. National Florence Nightingale Award For Kerala Nurse Who Treating Nipah Patient

Lini Puthussery, the nurse from Kerala who died due to Nipah virus that she contracted while treating a patient last year during the Nipah outbreak, was posthumously awarded National Florence Nightingale Award 2019. The award was presented by President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday in New Delhi and it was received by her husband Sajeesh P.

The World Health Organisation also announced the year 2020 as the ‘Year of Nurses and Midwives’. The year 2020 also commemorates the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, after whom the nursing awards have been named. The National Florence Nightingale Awards 2019 were conferred upon 36 nursing professionals including midwives, nurses and lady health visitors from different states and union territories.

8. Davi Kopenawa wins Alternate Nobel Prize for protecting the Amazon rainforest

Yanomami shaman Davi Kopenawa, the “Dalai Lama of the Rainforest,” has received this year’s Right Livelihood Award, also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize” at Stockholm, Sweeden. He has led his people’s 20-year campaign to protect their Amazonian territory. Combined with the Yanomami territory in Venezuela, it is the largest area of rainforest under indigenous control anywhere in the world.

Davi has frequently been threatened by the gold miners and politicians who target the resources inside the Yanomami territory. He lives in his community, Watoriki (the Windy Mountain), practicing shamanism. Shamanism is a kind of spiritual healing tradition that focuses on an individual’s oneness with nature, and this is a practice that can be learned by anyone thanks to multiple Shamanism Courses Online. Although more than a healing procedure, it is a way of life. In his village, Davi’s father-in-law, Lourival, was one of the oldest and most respected Yanomami shamans.

9. Duncan Hamilton wins William Hill Sports Book of the Year for third time

Duncan Hamilton has won the 31st William Hill Sports Book of the Year award, becoming the only author in its history to have won three times. He was presented with the 30,000 cash prize for his biography of the Guardian’s late cricket correspondent Neville Cardus.

Previous winners of the prestigious award include Nick Hornby, Brian Moore and Marcus Trescothick. The Guardian’s Donald McRae, who was also hoping to win his third William Hill award, was on the six-strong shortlist with his book In Sunshine or in Shadow: How Boxing Brought Hope in the Troubles.

Football is the most successful topic having won seven awards followed by cricket (six) and boxing (five). The William Hill Sports Book of the Year prize has been awarded annually since 1989.

10. Nation pays homage to Dr BR Ambedkar on his 64th Mahaparinirvan Diwas

President Ram Nath Kovind led the nation in paying tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar on his 64th Mahaparinirvan Diwas. The country is observing the 63rd death anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar. Dr B R Ambedkar is known for his contributions towards drafting the constitution.

11. ISRO Sets Up Space Technology Cells In IITs, IISc And Other Colleges

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the setting up of five space technology cells (STCs) at India’s premier engineering and science colleges to conduct space research, build new applications and high-end technology. ISRO said that STCs have been installed at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses in, Bombay, Kanpur, Madras and Kharagpur, Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and at the Joint Research Programme with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

Last year, ISRO had announced to launch incubators across India to mentor space startups. The Indian space agency worked closely with startups to build newer solutions in rocketry communication satellites, and various remote sensing data among others. Previously, ISRO was engaged with startups through Antrix Corp, where it worked with space startups such as Bellatrix Aerospace, Aniara Communications, Satsure and Exseed Space.

12. 7 Indian cities on Top 100 City Destinations list; Delhi ranked 11th

A UK-based global market research company Euromonitor International has named seven Indian cities in its recent Top 100 City Destinations 2019 report. Delhi features as the 11th city on the list. Other cities include Mumbai at 14th rank, Agra at 26th rank, Chennai ranked 36th, Jaipur at 39th, Kolkata and Bengaluru ranked 76th and 100th respectively.

13. India 5th worst country for biometric data privacy: Report

India is the fifth-worst country in terms of privacy of biometric data collected by the government, said a report by UK tech research firm Comparitech. The report scored each country out of 25, with 25 indicating most invasive use of biometrics. India scored 19, sharing its spot with Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines, while China scored the highest at 24.

14. NASA Parker Solar Probe sends back 1st information from sun’s edge

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, which has flown closer to the sun than any other spacecraft, has sent back its first observations from the solar atmosphere’s edge. Over the next six years, Parker will follow an elliptical orbit, eventually reaching so near the sun that it will not be sending pictures as pointing the camera towards the sun would melt it.

15. Priyanka Chopra tops IMDb 2019 list of Indian celebrities

Actress Priyanka Chopra has been named as the top star of Indian cinema and television series in 2019, in a list released by the global film and TV website IMDb. Actress Disha Patani, who has attained the second position, is followed by Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. Last year, Deepika Padukone topped the list.

16. Kiren Rijiju announces Ripu Daman Bevli as Plogging Ambassador of India

Minister of State(I/C) for Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Kiren Rijiju felicitated Ripu Daman Bevli, popularly known as the Plogman of India and named him the Plogging Ambassador of India. The minister also launched the nation-wide Plogging Ambassador Mission under which, Indians who have been running and cleaning their cities, towns or districts, will be nominated as Plogging Ambassadors of their region.

Plog Run is a unique way of picking up garbage while jogging and was added to the Fit India Movement as a unique way of combining cleanliness and fitness. Bevli, who started plogging in 2017, started the Fit India Plogging Run with the aim to make India litter-free. Belvi and his team have cleaned up 50 cities and covered over 1000km in about 2 months, collecting 2.7 tonnes of garbage.

17. Ruby Ahluwalia Conferred With Change Makers Award

Ruby Ahluwalia, Founder of Sanjeevani – Life Beyond Cancer was conferred with the Change Maker award at the just concluded Grant Thornton SABERA Awards 2019 in recognition of her unflinching dedication and support to underprivileged cancer patients and for helping to rehabilitate them.

Sanjeevani – Life Beyond Cancer flagship program Satori (A holistic healing initiative for cancer patients) was also recognised and awarded under the “Swathya & Kalyan” category. The award was given to the organisation for their exceptional work in the field of handholding and rehabilitation of underprivileged cancer patients. Sanjeevani has helped over 2,00,000 patients since inception in 2012 and currently works across 10 states in India.

18. ICAI International Conference 2019 inaugurated at Mumbai

The two day International Conference organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was inaugurated on December 6, 2019 at Mumbai. The Conference “Accountancy Profession: Catalyzing Reforms, Creating Values” is a part of ICAI’s effort to dwell deeper into emerging paradigm of Accountancy Profession and bring the Indian and global perspective together on issues that are of contemporary relevance while ensuring continuous professional development of its members.

19. Tamil Nadu Maintains its Position as a Leading State in Frost & Sullivan’s 2019 “Growth, Innovation & Leadership Index for Economic Development in India”

Tamil Nadu was ranked second for the third consecutive year in the “Growth, Innovation and Leadership (GIL) Index for Economic Development in India”, a data-driven framework developed by Frost & Sullivan.

Frost & Sullivan released the third edition of its GIL Index for Economic Development in India, for 2019. This year, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, along with Tamil Nadu, were named the top 5 states in overall economic development in the country. Tamil Nadu’s high rank was an outcome of its impressive scores across all 10 pillars of analysis.
