1. Olympic Cyclist Daniela Chirinos Passes Away at 51

The cycling world is deeply saddened by the loss of Daniela Larreal Chirinos, a well-known Olympic cyclist from Venezuela who passed away at the age of 51. Chirinos had an impressive career that lasted more than ten years, making a lasting impact on track cycling and proudly representing Venezuela on the international stage.

On August 15, Chirinos was unexpectedly found dead in her home in Las Vegas. This happened after a friend, worried because they hadn’t heard from her, asked the police to check on her. This tragic news has shocked the athletic community, especially in Venezuela and the cycling world.

2. Tata AIA Life Launches ‘Sampoorna Raksha Promise’

3. World Water Week 2024: 25-29 August

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is organizing the next World Water Week from August 25-29, 2024. This annual conference, held since 1991, is the leading event focused on global water issues.

For World Water Week 2024, SIWI has chosen the theme “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future.” This theme highlights the importance of global cooperation in tackling water-related challenges that go beyond national borders. The goal is to promote peace and sustainability through effective water management.

4. Maharashtra Adopts Unified Pension Scheme Ahead of Assembly Polls

In an important step ahead of the October 2024 Legislative Assembly election, Maharashtra has become the first state to adopt the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for its employees, just hours after the central government introduced it. This decision will benefit around 13.5 lakh state employees, including those in recognized and grant-aided educational institutions, non-agricultural universities, and zilla parishads. The scheme will start in March 2024.

Key Features of the Unified Pension Scheme

Assured Pension: Employees will receive 50% of the average basic pay they earned during the last 12 months before retirement, provided they have at least 25 years of service. If they have fewer years, the pension will be adjusted proportionately, with a minimum requirement of 10 years of service.

Assured Family Pension: If the employee passes away, their family will receive 60% of the pension that the employee was entitled to before their death.

Assured Minimum Pension: After retirement, employees will receive a minimum pension of ₹10,000 per month if they have at least 10 years of service.

Inflation Indexation: The pension, family pension, and minimum pension will be adjusted for inflation based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW).

Lump Sum Payment: Upon retirement, employees will get a lump sum payment equivalent to 1/10th of their monthly salary for every six months of completed service, along with gratuity. This payment will not reduce the amount of the assured pension.

5. Nasscom Appoints Sindhu Gangadharan as New Chairperson

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), India’s leading IT industry organization, has announced a major leadership change. Sindhu Gangadharan, the Managing Director of SAP Labs India, has been appointed as the new chairperson of Nasscom. This appointment is a significant milestone for the organization and signals potential new directions for India’s technology sector.

6. NALCO, IISSSC signs MoU for Skill Development of Contractual Employees

NALCO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Iron & Steel Skill Council (IISSSC) to implement Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programs for its contractual employees. The MoU was signed at NALCO Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

7. Harmanpreet Kaur to lead India in Women’s T20 World Cup

Harmanpreet Kaur, known for her powerful batting, will lead a 15-member Indian squad in the Women’s T20 World Cup, now set to take place in the UAE from October 3. Star batter Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as the vice-captain. Richa Ghosh is the designated wicketkeeper, along with Yastika Bhatia in the squad. The tournament, originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3-20, will now be hosted in Dubai and Sharjah, UAE.
