1. KVIC: First Silk Training cum Production Centre in Arunachal Pradesh

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission is to set up the first of its kind training cum production centre of silk in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The centre is to be launched in the first week of September, 2020.

The KVIC will provide machinery such as handlooms, warping drums and silk reeling machines. The centre is to provide training to 25 local artisans and will boost weaving activities in the region.

2. World Biofuel Day celebrated on 10th August

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas celebrates the World Biofuel Day on 10th August every year. On the occasion, the ministry also organized the webinar with the theme “Biofuels towards Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

3. Former WWE wrestler James ‘Kamala’ Harris passes away

Former wrestler James Harris, who was also known as “Kamala”, passed away. Harris fought with the greatest superstars in sports-entertainment history including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, and Andre the Giant. “The Ugandan Giant” was a unique character who operated both in and out of the ring in a memorable way.

4. Submarine Cable connectivity to Andaman & Nicobar Islands launched

The submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) connecting Andaman & Nicobar Islands to the mainland has been launched by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The 2300 Kms long submarine cable will boost the endless opportunities in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by providing better internet & mobile connectivity.

5. Mauritius declares a “state of environmental emergency”

A “state of environmental emergency” has been declared by the island nation of Mauritius. The environmental emergency has been declared as a Japanese bulk carrier “MV Wakashio” ran aground on a reef in Mauritius and began leaking oil into the ocean. The ship stranded two weeks ago is leaking tons of fuel into the surrounding waters.

6. Former MP Nandi Yellaiah passes away

Former Congress leader and eight-time parliamentarian from Telangana, Nandi Yellaiah passed away. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Siddipet in 1979. He was elected to Lok Sabha six times and Rajya Sabha twice from 2002 to 2014.

7. Bangladesh to construct War Memorial for Indian soldiers

Bangladesh has took a decision to construct a monument for the Indian soldiers. The country will establish monument for the Indian soldiers who died in 1971 during the Bangladesh’s struggle for independence from Pakistan. The announcement was made by the Bangladesh War Liberation Minister Mozammel Haque.

8. LIC acquires close to 5% stake in YES Bank

Yes Bank said LIC has acquired close to 5 per cent shareholding in the bank by purchasing shares from the open market. With the fresh acquisition, the hold of LIC has increased from 0.75 per cent to 4.98 per cent, Yes Bank said in a regulatory filing.

9. World Lion Day observed on August 10

World Lion Day is the brainchild of co-founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert, a husband-and-wife team with a passion for big cats. They began the initiative in 2013, bringing together both National Geographic and the Big Cat Initiative under a single banner to protect the remaining big cats living in the wild.

10. FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right India’ movement wins ‘Food System Vision Prize’

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)  said it has been awarded the ‘Food System Vision Prize’ for its ‘Eat Right India’ movement’s vision, along with nine other finalists.
