1. Mauritius declares emergency over oil spill

The island of Mauritius declared environmental emergency due to oil spill caused by Japanese owned ship that was stranded off the coast days ago.

The MV Wakashio of Japanese companies Nagashiki Shipping Ltd and Okiyo Maritime Corporation was on its way from Brazil to Singapore carrying 4,000 tonnes of fuel. The ship ran aground on July 25, 2020.

2. United Nations releases 6 million USD in response to Beirut Explosion

The United Nations released 6 million USD in response to the explosion at Beirut port. With this, the total UN funding towards relief operation of the explosion has come to 15 million USD.

A catastrophic blast occurred at the Lebanon capital, Beirut. It was driven by tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate.

3. Mahinda Rajapaksa sworn-in as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for the fourth time

Former President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa took an oath as a Prime Minister of the country for the fourth time on August 9, 2020. He took a hold of Prime Ministerial position after his party secured a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections.

4. World Tribal Day being observed today

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples or World Tribal Day is being observed today.

The day is aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of the world’s indigenous population. The date recognizes the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982.

The day is celebrated on August 9th every year from 1994, in accordance with the declaration by the United Nations.

5. Nitin Sethi bags ACJ investigative Journalism award

Nitin Sethi of The Huffington Post India and Shiv Sahay Singh of The Hindu bagged the prestigious Asian College of Journalism’s Award for Investigative Journalism and the K. P. Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism, respectively.

6. Deepak Shetty appointed as Deputy CEO and Managing Director of JCB India

The JCB Group announced the appointment of Deepak Shetty as Deputy CEO and Managing Director of JCB India Limited.

Beginning next year, Shetty will take over as MD and CEO from Subir Kumar Chowdhury who has announced his retirement after having been with JCB India for close to 15 years, the company said in its release.

7. Mukesh Ambani Eclipses Richest European To Become World’s No. 4

Mukesh Ambani has surged past Europe’s wealthiest man, making him the world’s fourth-richest person.

Reliance Industries Ltd.’s chairman is now worth $80.6 billion, after amassing $22 billion this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

That gives him a bigger wealth pile than France’s Bernard Arnault, whose LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE has suffered from customers curbing high-end fashion purchases faster than the company can cut costs.
