1. NCW Launches Digital Shakti Center to Combat Cybercrimes Against Women
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has opened the Digital Shakti Center in New Delhi to tackle the increasing number of online crimes against women. This center aims to empower women with knowledge about cyber safety, help them with registering complaints, and ensure a safe online environment.
Addressing the Cybercrime Challenge
There has been a significant rise in online crimes targeting women in India, which led to the creation of the Digital Shakti Center. The NCW has been working to fight these crimes through the Digital Shakti campaign since 2018. The center will provide thorough education on cyber safety, hands-on technology training, and support for victims of cybercrimes.
2. India’s First GI-Tagged Fig Juice Exported to Poland
Purandar Highlands Farmers Producer Company Ltd has reached an important milestone by exporting India’s first GI-tagged fig juice to Poland. This achievement follows their successful export of GI-tagged Purandar figs to Hong Kong in February 2023.
A Breakthrough for Indian Agriculture
Purandar Highlands is the first company to export Indian fig juice to Europe and to export commercial quantities of Purandar figs to Hong Kong. These products are made from Purandar figs, known for their taste, size, and nutritional value, and have a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The company credits government support, including encouragement from Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, for their success.
3. India to Build Green Highways with World Bank Aid
The Government of India and the World Bank are collaborating on the Green National Highway Corridor Project (GNHCP). This project aims to build 781 kilometers of eco-friendly highways across four states: Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, focusing on safety and climate resilience.

The World Bank will provide a loan of $500 million for the project, with a total cost of $1288.24 million (Rs. 7,662.47 crore).
Green Technology Focus
The GNHCP will use green technologies in highway construction, including recycled materials to conserve natural resources, local and sustainable materials like fly ash and waste plastic, and bio-engineering techniques for slope protection. The project is expected to be completed by May 2026.
4. Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus To Lead Bangladesh Interim Government
Bangladesh’s Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will lead the country’s interim government after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and left the country amid a mass student-led uprising. The announcement came from President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s press secretary, Joynal Abedin, on August 7.

The decision to appoint Prof Yunus as the interim government’s chief adviser followed a meeting between the President, military leaders, and student leaders. Prof Yunus accepted the role, acknowledging the students’ requests and the difficult situation the country is facing.

5. Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya In Collaboration With Airbus Begins
Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) has launched its first executive training program for the aviation sector at the Asian Institute of Transport Development (AITD) in Dwaraka, New Delhi. The three-day program, running from August 5th to August 7th, focuses on “Safety Management Systems” for professionals and is conducted in collaboration with Airbus.

The program has attracted participants from major airlines such as IndiGo and Vistara, as well as representatives from Airbus and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. International professionals, including four participants from Nepal and four from Bhutan, are also attending. Leading industry experts are instructing the course.
6. Government Appoints Challa Sreenivasulu Setty as SBI Chairman
On August 6, 2024, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Challa Sreenivasulu Setty’s appointment as the Chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI). Setty, currently the senior-most Managing Director (MD) of SBI, will take office on August 28, 2024, succeeding Dinesh Kumar Khara, who will retire at 63.

Setty will serve as Chairman for three years, starting from the date he takes office. The ACC’s decision follows a recommendation from the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB). Setty has extensive experience in corporate credit, retail banking, digital banking, international banking, and banking in developed markets. He began his career with SBI in 1988 as a Probationary Officer and has led various significant portfolios and task forces.
7. Why Vinesh Phogat Disqualified In Paris Olympic 2024?
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics for failing to meet the weight requirement for her 50 kg gold medal. Phogat was reportedly over the permissible weight limit by just 100 grams. According to competition rules, she will not be eligible for a silver medal, leaving only gold and bronze winners in the 50 kg category.

Phogat was roughly 100 grams over the permissible limit, disqualifying her. Competition rules state that wrestlers must stay within their weight category on both days of the competition.
8. National Javelin Day 2024 – Aug 07
On August 7, 2021, Neeraj Chopra made history by winning India’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in track and field with his javelin throw of 87.58 meters. This achievement made him the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold, following Abhinav Bindra.

The summit focuses on trade facilitation, regional connectivity, energy security, inclusive growth, and sustainable development to enhance regional collaboration and investment.
