1.       World Wide Web inventor wins computing’s highest award

Berners-Lee who invented the World Wide Web is this year’s recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, computing’s version of the Nobel Prize. He is 61.  The award, announced by the Association for Computing Machinery, marks another pinnacle for the British native, who has already been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and named as one of the 100 most important people of the 20th Century by Time magazine.

2.       RBI appoints Malvika Sinha as new Executive Director

The Reserve Bank has appointed Malvika Sinha as Executive Director following the appointment of B P Kanungo as Deputy Governor. Sinha took charge on April 3. As Executive Director, she will look after foreign exchange department, department of government and bank accounts and internal debt management wing

3.       Nasscom appoints Quatrro’s Raman Roy as Chairman

IT industry body Nasscom has appointed Quatrro CMD Raman Roy its chairman for 2017-18. It has also named Rishad Premji, Wipro chief strategy officer and son of technology czar Azim Premji, as the vice chairman. Roy, who served as the vice chairman in the previous fiscal, will take on the new role from 6 April.

4.       Jhargram becomes 22nd Bengal district

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared Jhargram as the 22nd district of West Bengal, fulfilling a longstanding demand of its residents. “April 4 will henceforth be celebrated as Jhargram Divas,” Banerjee said at a public meeting in Jhargram town, headquarters of the new district. She announced a bouquet of developmental projects for the district, including a stadium and several schools, colleges, and hospitals.

5.       BS-IV Grade Fuel launched by Central Government after BS-III ban

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas officially launched the low emission Bharat stage (BS)-IV Grade fuel in Bhubaneswar. The launch was made on the special occasion of Utkal Diwas which is the foundation day of Odisha. Bharat stage (BS)-IV Grade fuel was introduced after BS-III compatible vehicles sales and registration were banned by Central government from April 1, 2017

6.       SASEC’s Finance Ministers Meeting held in New Delhi

The meeting of finance ministers of South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (Sasec) programme got underway. It included India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. A Sasec vision document was launched on the occasion. ‘We ring Asia in 21st century’ was the vision document theme.  Three main pillars of synergy in transport, trade facilitation and energy were discussed.

7.       Geetha Johri- Gujarat’s first woman Police Chief

Director General of Police (DGP) Geetha Johri was appointed in-charge police chief of Gujarat. The minister of state for home Pradeepsinh Jadeja announced the decision while stating that Johri has been given the additional charge as she is the senior-most IPS officer in the state. With this Johari has become the first woman IPS officer to be appointed for the top job in the state.

8.       Government sets up National Board for Electric Mobility

The Centre has notified the constitution of the National Board of Electric Mobility (NBEM). It also nominated six members of eminence and expertise from the automobile industry into it, including Vikram Kirloskar (Toyota Kirloskar Motors), Vinod Dasari (Ashok Leyland), Pawan Goenka (Mahindra & Mahindra and Sudarshan Venu (TVS Motors). The nominated members will have a tenure of two years or until further government order, whichever is earlier. The members can be re-nominated for additional terms

9.       April 5 2017: National Maritime Day

April 5 marks the National Maritime Day of India. On this day in 1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty, the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, journeyed to the United Kingdom. The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 5th April, 1964.

The strategic geographical position of the Indian sub-continent with vast expanse of the seas around naturally led to seafaring even in the days of the Indus Valley civilisation dating back to circa 3000 BC. Since time immemorial Indians have displayed a remarkable interest in seafaring and maritime activities. The shipbuilding industry in India had shown great progress so long as sailing ships with wooden hull were in vogue.

10.   Malaysia agrees to set up technology park in Andhra Pradesh

A Malaysian company has agreed to help set up a technology park in Andhra Pradesh that’s expected to attract private sector investment of $100 million in the first phase. The Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board and MIGHT Technology Nurturing Sdn. Bhd (MTN) have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on building the park, which will cover 250 acres and focus on new technologies.

11.   India, Malaysia tie up for skilling, entrepreneurship development

The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII),  has said it has tied up with Human Resource Development Fund under Ministry of HRD, Malaysia, for skill development, and assist the South-East Asian country in its target of ensuring 35 per cent skilled Malaysian workforce by 2020.

EDII and Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB), an arm of Human Resource Development Fund under Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, in the presence of Prime Minister and Dato Sri Mohammad Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, in this regard,

12.   India ranks 3rd for third year in a row in WADA doping charts

India has been ranked third for the third year in a row in a doping violation report published by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for 2015, with 117 athletes from the country being punished after testing positive for banned substances. India followed the Russian Federation (176) and Italy (129) in the chart, the same position as in the reports of 2013 and 2014.

13.   RBI issues licence for Aditya Birla Group for its payments bank

The Aditya Birla Group said it has received licence from the Reserve Bank of India to start payments bank.  Headed by Kumar Mangalam Birla, the group’s outfit Aditya Birla Nuvo had set up a 51:49 joint venture Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank Ltd — with telecom major Idea Cellular to launch payments bank services in the country.

14.   Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passes away

Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Kishori Amonkar passed away after a brief illness. She was 84. Born on April 10, 1932, Amonkar was recognised as one of the foremost singers in the Hindustani tradition and as an innovative exponent of the Jaipur gharana. A gharana is a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style.
