1. RBI cancels licence of Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licence of Maharashtra-based Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank Limited due to inadequate capital. On liquidation, every depositor is entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakhs from the DICGC subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961.

2. International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

The International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed every year on April 26 to raise awareness of the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the risks of nuclear energy in general. The United Nations (UN) proclaimed the day on April 26, 2016, that marked the 30th anniversary of the 1986 nuclear disaster.

3. World Intellectual Property Day: 26 April

World Intellectual Property Day is observed globally on April 26 every year. It was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the world”.

4. International Delegate’s Day: 25 April

International Delegate’s Day observed globally on 25 April every year. This day is observed to raise awareness of the role of the representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations.

International Delegate’s Day marks the anniversary of the first day of the San Francisco Conference which is also known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization.

5. Zhao: 1st Asian woman to win best director Oscar

The Chinese born film maker Chloe Zhao has become the first Asian woman to win the Best director at the Academy Awards. She won the award for her film Nomadland.

Zhao was born in China and went to a boarding school in London. She then moved to Los Angeles where she completed her high school. Her debut film was Songs My Brothers Taught me.

6. New Zealand’s action to save Maui dolphins

The Maui Dolphins are found only in the West Coast of New Zealand and no where else in the world. They are one of the smallest dolphin’s subspecies globally. There are only 63 Maui dolphins left in the world.

The New Zealand Government along with World Wide Fund and some few fishing companies is to develop a drone that is capable of finding and tracking Maui dolphins using Artificial Intelligence.

7. Nomadland wins best picture award at Oscars; Anthony Hopkins wins best actor award and Frances McDormand wins award for best actress

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” has won best picture at the 93rd Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) award today. China-born Zhao has become the first woman of color to win best director and a historically diverse group of winners took home awards. Zhao is also only the second woman in Oscar history to win the Academy award.

8. NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter makes yet another successful flight on the red planet

The Ingenuity Mars helicopter of NASA has made yet another successful flight on the red planet. NASA said it flew faster and farther on Sunday, April 25 than in any tests it went through on Earth. The third flight of the helicopter was recorded by the US Space Agency’s Perseverance rover on Mars.

9. Justice NV Ramana takes oath as 48th Chief Justice of India

Justice NV Ramana took the oath as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on April 24, 2021. He was administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind in a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeds Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, who retired on April 23rd.
