1. International day Day of Human Space Flight is observed on 12 April
International Day of Human Space Flight is observed on 12 April. The day commemorates the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic spaceflight in 1961. The day is celebrated as the Cosmonautics Day in Russia. The day aims to ensure the countries realize the aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes.
2. Indonesian Anak Krakatau volcano witnessed longest eruption
Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano erupted on 11 April. It spewed a column of ash 500 meters into the sky. It last erupted in 2018. No casualties were reported. Anak Krakatau means the child of Kratakau, is the offspring of the famous Krakatau volcano. The volcano first erupted in 1883 triggered a period of global cooling.
3. RV Verma appointed as non-executive chairman at AU Small Finance Bank
AU Small Finance Bank has appointed RV Verma, the former chairman and managing director of National Housing Bank, as a non-executive chairman from April 8 for one year.Reserve Bank of India has given approval for it.
Verma, an MA in Economics has been associated with the Jaipur-based lender since 2018 as independent director.
4. Flipkart, Tata Consumer tie up to distribute, deliver essentials
E-commerce firm Flipkart and Tata Consumer Products Ltd have partnered to enable access to essential food and beverage products to Indians through a system where the latter’s distributors will list as marketplace sellers on the former’s platform.
5. F1 great Stirling Moss dies aged 90
F1 great Briton Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90 after a long illness. Moss took part in F1 from 1951 to 1961 before being forced to retire after a crash in 1962. In his career, Moss, who won 16 career Grand Prix, finished second in the F1 championships four times between 1955 and 1961.
6. Justice V Kanagaraj appointed new State Election Commissioner of Andhra Pradesh
Justice V Kanagaraj, a retired judge of the Madras High Court, assumed charge as the State Election Commissioner of Andhra Pradesh. The swift developments that began with the promulgation of an Ordinance amending Section 200 of the AP Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, leading to the removal of incumbent SEC N Ramesh Kumar, culminated with Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan issuing a notification appointing Justice Kanagaraj as the new State Election Commissioner.
7. Former Gujarat cricketer Walter D’Souza passes away
Former Gujarat cricketer, Walter D’Souza, 93, passed away in his sleep at his residence. He was one of India’s oldest living first-class cricketers, who featured in 16 fixtures for Gujarat.
In the 27 innings that he appeared in, D’Souza scored 821, with an average of 35.69.
8. Tata Capital Announces The Elevation Of Sarosh Amaria To Managing Director
The Board of Tata Capital Financial Services (TCFSL), subsidiary of Tata Capital Limited, at its meeting on 10th April 2020 announced the elevation of Sarosh Amaria to the Managing Director effective from May 5, 2020 subject to RBI approval. He will succeed in Kusal Roy, who has decided to pursue opportunities outside the Tata Group. Kusal Roy will continue to serve as Managing Director of TCFSL till May 4, 2020.
9. India retains 108th slot at FIFA’s latest ranking
India football team retained its 108th spot in the latest FIFA rankings issued. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the whole raft of international fixtures including qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and other major tournaments has been postponed.
The dates were redrawn for showpiece men’s events such as the Olympic football tournament, CONMEBOL Copa America and UEFA EURO.
10. Retired SC judge Shiva Kirti Singh is new TDSAT chairman
Retired Supreme Court judge Shiva Kirti Singh has been named chairman of the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), two persons aware told ET. The top slot in the telecom tribunal had been vacant for nearly a year since previous chairman, Justice Aftab Alam retired last June.
