1. Centre to deposit Rs.1,000 in women PMJDY accounts in two installments

Ministry of Finance announced Rs.500 has been deposited in each Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) account held by women for the month of April and Rs.500 more will be given over the month of May in equal installments.

A total of 38.08 crore accounts are benefitting under the PMJDY. Out of it, 20.60 crore accounts are held by women across India. As of 1 April 2020, the deposits in the PMJDY accounts stood at over Rs 1.19 lakh crore. The aim is to provide help and support to the people amid the lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

2. MHRD launched Samadhan, a challenge to find quick solution to COVID-19 pandemic

The Innovation Cell of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) in collaboration with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Forge and InnovatioCuris launched “SAMADHAN”, a mega online challenge, to test the ability of students to innovate.

3. FATF to review Pakistans performance to fight money laundering

Global anti-money laundering watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has announced that it will review Pakistan’s performance to meet international commitments in the fight against terror financing.

FATF will review Pakistan’s performance to meet international commitments and standards in the fight against money laundering and terror financing at a meeting that has been scheduled to be held in Beijing on 21-26 June 2020.

4. New sectors to be added in the second phase of CPEC

Pakistan announced that it is to add more sectors like agriculture and tourism in the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The multi-billion-dollar project has slowed down due to the coronavirus outbreak.

China, earlier, has committed to invest over $60 billion in Pakistan as part of the CPEC under which it planned to build a number of special economic zones (SEZ).

5. Haryana doubled salary of Doctors, Nurses, medical professionals dealing with COVID-19 cases

Haryana state government has announced that it is to double the salary of Doctors, Nurses and other medical professionals dealing with COVID-19 patients. The announcement was made by the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

The announcement stated that the salaries of all those engaged in the fight against COVID-19 including doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, Class IV staff, Ambulance staff, Testing Lab staff will be doubled.

6. CSIR-CMERI develops Disinfection Walkways and Road Sanitizer Unit to counter coronavirus

CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) has developed technologies and products namely Disinfection Walkways and Road Sanitizer Unit. The technologies can help to counter the menacing coronavirus.

7. Anamika Roy Rashtrawar appointed MD & CEO of IFFCO Tokio

Anamika Roy Rashtrawar has taken charge as MD and CEO of General Insurance with effect from March 27, said a company release. Prior to this elevation, Rashtrawar was whole-time director with the private general insurer, which she had joined in June 2018. IFFCO Tokio General Insurance is a 51:49 joint venture between IFFCO and Tokio Marine Group.

8. Tata Power bags Edison Award for social innovation

Tata Power has been conferred with the Edison Award under social innovation category and social energy solutions sub-category. The Edison Awards, named after Thomas Alva Edison, recognises and honours the world’s best innovations and innovators.

9. IndiGo enters Brand Finance Top 50 Airlines list recognising the most valuable and strongest airline brands in 2020

India’s leading carrier – IndiGo – has been recognised as one of the most valuable and strongest airlines as per the Brand Finance Airlines 50 report for 2020. The airline was ranked at number 43 in the report as it entered the list for the first time. IndiGo, the only airline from India, ranked above the other two new entrants in the list – Shanghai Airlines from China and Vueling from Spain.

John Prine, the raspy-voiced country-folk singer whose ingenious lyrics to songs by turns poignant, angry and comic made him a favorite of Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and others, died on Tuesday in Nashville. He was 73.

11. Coronavirus: Delhi CM announces Operation Shield to fight Covid-19

Delhi government has come up with a term for its strategy to contain the spread of novel coronavirus – Operation Shield. As per the government strategy, SHIELD stands for sealing, home quarantine, isolation and tracing, essential supply, local sanitation and door-to-door checks.

12. Italian Olympic 800m finalist Donato Sabia dies of coronavirus aged 56

The Italian former middle-distance runner Donato Sabia has died from Covid-19 at the age of 56, the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni) has announced.

Coni said in a statement that Sabia, who twice reached the 800m Olympic final, had been in the intensive care unit of the San Carlo hospital on Potenza, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, for a few days.
