1.. China Surpasses India as Largest Importer of Russian Crude

China now imports more Russian crude oil by sea than India does. In March, China imported 1.82 million barrels per day (bpd), while India only imported 1.36 million bpd.

India is importing less because of restrictions and higher prices, which has caused this change.

China’s Imports Going Up

  • China bought 1.82 million barrels per day (bpd) of Russian oil by sea in March, more than India’s 1.36 million bpd.
  • China has become the biggest buyer of Russian crude oil that is shipped by sea, which is a big change.

India’s Import Patterns Are Changing

  • India has recently cut back on importing Russian crude oil because of different sanctions and rising prices.
  • India’s imports fell short of China’s in March, even though they went up 7% month-over-month. This shows that India is changing how it buys oil.

3. India Secures Second Overseas Port: Sittwe Agreement Approved by MEA

After getting permission from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India now has operational control over the Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

This is part of a plan to strengthen its maritime presence and improve connectivity in the area. India Ports Global (IPGL), a company fully owned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, will be in charge of running the whole port on the Kaladan River.

This is India’s second purchase of a foreign port, the first being Chabahar in Iran.

Important Facts About the Sittwe Port Agreement

Full control over operations: India now has full operational control over the Sittwe Port, unlike Chabahar where they only had limited control over the terminals.

This puts India in a strategic situation to compete with China in the Indian Ocean.

Lease for a Long Time: The deal includes a lease for a long time that can be renewed every three years. This lets India make big improvements to the port.

IPGL’s Job: India Ports Global Limited, which is a branch of Sagarmala Development Company Limited and works for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, will be in charge of building and running the port.
