  1. British-Indian educationist named ‘Asian Businesswoman of the Year’

An Indian-origin educationist in the UK, who moved to Britain after her marriage with no English language skills, has been named the ‘Asian Businesswoman of the Year’ in an award ceremony in Birmingham. 65-year-old Dame Asha Khemka, Principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College, was honoured for her efforts in the field of education and skills at the Asian Business Awards ceremony. The event, which took place at the famous Edgbaston cricket ground in the city, also marked the launch of the ‘Asian Rich List’ for the Midlands to highlight the high net worth Asians in the region.

  1. Smita Sandhane appointed MD of Saraswat Bank

Saraswat Bank, largest lender in the co-operative space, appointed Smita Sandhane as its managing director. Sandhane, who has been associated with the bank for the last 35 years and was serving as the chief financial officer, takes over from S K Banerji who retired recently.  She was serving as the joint managing director since August 2016, and has served as head of wholesale banking and planning, accounts and stressed assets in the past.

Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of 24th and last Jain Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir is being celebrated across the country  on 09 April 2017. Mahavir Jayanti is considered to be one of the most auspicious events for Jain people and holds a lot of importance in their religious life. Devotees of Lord Mahavir and his followers celebrate this festival by chanting prayers, offering Prasad and participating in chariot processions.

  1. AYUSH Minister to inaugurate the International Convention on World Homoeopathy Day

Minister of State (Independent Charge), for AYUSH Sh. Shripad Yesso Naik, will inaugurate the National Convention on World Homoeopathy Day on 10 April 2017 at New Delhi. Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Standing Committee of Ministry of AYUSH, Health and Family Welfare Dr. Manoj Rajoria will preside over the function. The event is being organized to commemorate the 262nd birth anniversary of the founder of Homoeopathy, Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, who was a great scholar, linguist and acclaimed scientist.

  1. DRDO ropes in Patanjali to market its herbal products

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Patanjali Ayurved Limited promoted by yoga guru Ramdev, have decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to market array of herbal products developed by the DRDO’s Life Sciences wing – Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR). The DRDO’s Life Sciences head Sashibala Singh and a couple of scientists met Ramdev and Acharya Balkhrisha, managing director of Patanjali. The two sides decided to ink an (MoU) soon. Life Sciences is one of the seven wings of the DRDO. The DRDO primarily develops weapons, missiles and other electronic products for the armed forces.

  1. Deendayal Rasoi Yojna launched in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh government kick-started its ambitious ‘Deendayal Rasoi Yojana’ under which subsidised meals will be available at Rs 5 per plate to people, especially the economically disadvantaged sections of society. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the scheme at Gwalior, while in Bhopal mayor Alok Sharma inaugurated the scheme. Shivraj Chouhan said as 2017 was the birth centenary year of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, the best tribute to the great visionary leader was to start a scheme under which nutritious food will be available to people at cheaper rates.

  1. Rajnath Singh launches Akshay Kumar’s portal ‘Bharat Ke Veer’

The Union Home Minister  Rajnath Singh inaugurated the web portal and mobile application named “Bharat ke Veer” on the occasion of Valour Day of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The portal is an IT based platform, with an objective to enable willing donors to contribute towards the family of a braveheart who sacrificed his/her life in line of duty. The amount so donated will be credited to the account of ‘Next of Kin’ of those Central Armed Police Force/Central Para Military Force soldiers. The actor Shri Akshay Kumar was the Guest of Honour during the function.

  1. Bengaluru launches pink police patrol vehicles for women

The Bengaluru Police have launched 51 ‘Pink Hoysalas’, the new patrol vehicles, to address complaints related to women and child safety. The Pink Hoysalas will function based on complaints registered through the Suraksha App or intimation to the police control room number and will have at least three women police personnel. The city police currently have 221 regular Hoysalas. These Pink Hoysalas will be deployed near schools, colleges, offices, shopping malls, temples and also movie theatres. Any complaint received by the control room will be taken and the nearest Pink Hoysala will be alerted to attend the call.

  1. PM Modi inaugurates world’s most advanced nanobiotech centre

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull inaugurated the world’s most advanced nanobiotechnology research centre, a joint venture between The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Deakin University, Australia. The cooperation in the field of education and research is the most important field of engagement between India and Australia. TERI-Deakin Nanobiotechnology Research Centre is a classic example of the kind of cutting edge research being done by the two countries.

  1. Underwater conference held in Kerala on marine pollution

Five CEOs of various IT firms held a meeting underwater to raise awareness about global warming and marine pollution. The meeting took place at a famous beach resort in Kovalam, Kerala. Armed with their scuba diving gear, the CEOs took plunge into the water 50 metres off the shore. The meeting lasted 20 minutes and ended with a pledge to protect the ocean and marine life. The conference comes on the heels of a recent global report which found seas around Mumbai, Kerala and Andaman and Nicobar Islands to be the most polluted in the world. The report found an alarming amount of plastic and debris in the waters which originated from the inland.

  1. Flipkart Buys eBay India

India’s largest online retailer Flipkart has closed a mammoth funding round of $1.4 billion from Tencent Holdings Ltd, eBay Inc. and Microsoft Corp., in the biggest-ever start-up funding round that both boosts Flipkart ability to compete with arch-rival Amazon India and takes the company a step closer to presenting itself (to investors and customers) as the only option to the US firm’s Indian arm. Flipkart Ltd will also buy eBay’s India business as part of the $1.4 billion deal. The funding round values Flipkart at $11.6 billion, which is lower than its peak valuation of $15 billion but still higher than the valuation it was assigned by some of its own investors last year.

  1. Russian frigate armed with cruise missiles heading to Mediterranean

The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich left the port of Sevastopol in Crimea for the Mediterranean where it will join the country’s naval forces deployed near the Syrian coast. The frigate will be operating as part of the permanent Russian Navy force in the Mediterranean,” the Interfax news agency quoted the navy’s Captain Vyacheclav Truhachev, a spokesman for the Black Sea fleet. The frigate armed with Kalibr (Caliber) cruise missiles was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea last November as part of Russia’s naval task force to Syria where it launched missile strikes against Islamic State targets.

  1. India, Australia ink 6 pacts at bilateral talks; to boost counter-terrorism

India and Australia have inked six pacts including one aimed at boosting counter-terrorism cooperation after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull in New Delhi. The two leaders held comprehensive discussions on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern. The two sides inked a pact to boost counter-terrorism cooperation which was signed between the Ministry of Home Affairs and its counterpart Australian ministry.

  1. Hamilton beats Vettel to win his fifth Chinese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix. It was Hamilton’s 54th career win and a record fifth in Shanghai. The Briton eased his Mercedes across the line 6.2 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Max Verstappen, who started 16th, finished a surprise third to hand his Red Bull team their 100th podium.

  1. Sakshi Malik climbs to 5th spot in World Wrestling rankings

Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has climbed up to World No. 5 in women’s 58kg freestyle in the latest standings released by the United World Wrestling. In the men’s freestyle category, Sandeep Tomar also broke into the top-10, reaching the seventh position in men’s 57kg. In Sakshi’s weight category, Kaori Icho of Japan heads the points table.Georgia’s Vladimir Khinchegashvili, who has been an integral part of the Pro Wrestling League, tops the chart in men’s 57kg.
