- PM to launch digital exhibition on Champaran Satyagraha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a digital exhibition in the national capital to mark the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha. The PM will also address the gathering after the launch at the National Archives. The exhibition titled ‘Bapu Ko Karyanjali’ will not only focus on the Champaran movement, but with this event the government is planning to re-emphasise the importance of cleanliness, which was close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart and was also a key element of the movement.
- 26 projects worth ₹2100 cr approved for Namami Gange project
National Mission for Clean Ganga has approved 26 projects at an estimated cost of Rs 2154.28 Crore. This amount will be spent in the states of UP, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Delhi for creation of new sewage treatment capacity of 188 Million Liters per Day (MLD) (approx.), rehabilitation of 596 MLD of existing STP capacity, upgradation of 30 MLD of existing STP capacity, Interception and Diversion works and sewerage network of 145.05 km.
- Centre kicks off programme on cyber physical systems
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has initiated a Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) programme. It has been conceived as a ₹3,000-crore exercise that would, at first, take root in some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), according to officials familiar with the project. An initial budget of ₹100 crore has been earmarked for the project in the current financial year. tCPS is an interdisciplinary field that deals with the deployment of computer-based systems that do things in the physical world, such as, for instance, the self-driven cars produced by Google and Tesla.
- Kolkata- Khulna-Dhaka bus service flagged off from Kolkata
A Kolkata-Khulna-Dhaka bus service was ceremoniously flagged off from Kolkata. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, his counterpart from Bangladesh Smt. Sheikh Hasina and the Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt Mamata Banerjee jointly initiated the ceremony from Hyderabad House in New Delhi. This is a part of several initiatives being taken to strengthen bilateral relations and provide better road and rail connectivity for citizens of both the countries. Senior Ministers and high level officials from the Government of West Bengal and visiting delegates from Bangladesh participated in the flagging off ceremony held at Kolkata
- India ranks 40th in WEF’s global travel & tourism ranking
India has jumped 12 places to 40th rank globally in travel and tourism competitiveness list by World Economic Forum. India is one of the countries that improved the most as it gained 12 places in Asia, but lagged behind its other Asian peers like Japan and China which were ranked way ahead at 4th and 13th place, respectively. Spain is ranked at the top in the list. India continues to enrich its cultural resources, protecting more cultural sites and intangible expressions through UNESCO World Heritage lists, and via a greater digital presence.
- NBA launches first basketball school in India
The National Basketball Association has announced the setting up of its first basketball school, a network of tuition-based basketball development programmes, in Mumbai. The school, as part of a multi-year agreement announced with India On Track (IOT), is open to male and female players between ages 6-18. The new initiative adds an additional layer to the NBA’s existing basketball development efforts, including the Jr. NBA, Basketball without Borders (BWB) and NBA Academies.
- Canara Bank partners with BSNL
Canara Bank, a public sector bank, has embarked upon an ambitious project of upgrading the bandwidth at all its branches to 2 Mbps in partnership with BSNL. The project was officially inaugurated jointly by Dina Bandhu Mohapatra, Executive Director, Canara Bank, in the presence of P V Bharathi, Executive Director, Canara Bank and other top executives of the Bank and BSNL. NK Mehta, Director, BSNL, reiterated the commitment of BSNL in providing seamless quality service to the Bank. While M G Ajayan, General Manager (IT) & CIO, Canara Bank, said the bandwidth upgradation activity shall be completed in three months.
- HDFC Bank UPI on Chillr app
HDFC Bank has said its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will also be available on Chillr, a multi-bank mobile payments app. Currently, UPI is available on HDFC Bank’s own mobile banking app. UPI is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to enable faster money transfer between any two parties’ bank accounts. In a statement, the bank said, “Chillr has been running on Immediate Mobile Payment Service (IMPS) with 11 banks prior to this launch and has achieved a milestone of monthly transaction value of over ₹500 crore.
- Malala to become youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace
Malala Yousafzai, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is to become the youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace. Yousafzai, 19, will be appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and will help promote girl’s education around the world as part of her new role. The Pakistani education activist came to prominence when a Taliban gunman shot her in the head on her school bus in 2012 as punishment for campaigning for girls to go to school which defied the militant Islamic group’s ban on female education.
- India extends $4.5 billion new line of credit to Bangladesh
India and Bangladesh have signed 22 agreements in strategic sectors like defence and civil nuclear cooperation during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India. In a joint statement after signing of agreements in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new line of concessional credit of $4.5 billion for implementation of development projects in Bangladesh. Lauding Bangladesh’s efforts in order to curb terrorism in the country, Modi said country’s zero tolerance policy towards terrorism is an inspiration for other countries.
- Boxer Shyam Kumar wins gold at Thailand International
Indian boxer K Shyam Kumar (49kg) clinched a gold medal at the Thailand International Tournament in Bangkok without even stepping inside the ring for his summit. Shyam, who won a gold at the 2015 edition of the event, was to take on Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan in the final. Dusmatov pulled out of the bout owing to an injury, giving the Indian his second gold medal at the event.
