1. Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze, Mirabai Chanu Qualifies for Paris Olympics 2024 at IWF World Cup

Phuket, Thailand played host to the 2024 IWF World Cup from March 31st through April 11th.

The world regulatory body for men’s and women’s weightlifting, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), was in charge of the event organization.

Bronze Medal Won by Bindyarani Devi

  • Bindyarani Devi, a 25-year-old weightlifter from India, took third place in the 55-kilogram division. The snatch was 83 kg and the clean and jerk 113 kg, for a total of 196 kg lifted by her.
  • At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, she won silver with a weight of 203 kilograms, so this was below her.
  • With a lift of 234 kilograms, North Korean Kang Hyon Gyong earned first place, and Mihaela Cambei of Romania got second.

Impressive Mirabai Chanu Earns Spot in 2024 Paris Olympics

  • The Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, even though she placed 12th in the women’s 49-kilogram division.
  • With her Olympic spot guaranteed, she will be the sole Indian weightlifter competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
  • To compete in the Olympics in Paris, the last tournament to qualify was the IWF World Cup.
  • At the moment, Mirabai Chanu is sitting pretty in the 49kg Olympic Qualification Ranking, ranked second. One spot for each nation at the Paris Olympics will be reserved for the top ten weightlifters in each class.

2. Rakesh Mohan Appointed to World Bank Economic Advisory Panel

Former RBI deputy governor Rakesh Mohan will be joining the World Bank Group’s Economic Advisory Panel.

London School of Economics’s IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government, Lord Nicholas Stern, will preside over this panel. The panel will be co-chaired by Indermit Gill, the chief economist of the World Bank Group.

At the think tank Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) in New Delhi, Rakesh Mohan is holding the positions of president emeritus and distinguished fellow. The Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council counts him as a part-time member as well.

3. National Maritime Day 2024 is observed on April 05

The Indian government celebrates National Maritime Day every year on April 5. Today is a day to honor the marine industry’s contribution to the country’s economic growth and trade with other countries.

This date is an important turning point in India’s naval history. The British had a monopoly on sea lines until April 5, 1919, when the first Indian commercial ship, the SS Loyalty, set sail for the UK. This event was very important for the growth of India’s shipping business.

4. UPI Transactions Surge by 56% in India: Worldline Report

A study from payment service provider Worldline says that in the second half of 2023, UPI transactions in India grew by an amazing 56% year-over-year, which was much faster than the growth of only 6% in card transactions.

The study shows that the number of UPI transactions spiked to 65.77 billion, up from 42.09 billion during the same time. The amount of transactions also went up a lot, from Rs 69.36 trillion to Rs 99.68 trillion, a 44% increase.

5. DRDO successfully conducted a flight test of the new generation ballistic missile called ‘Agni-Prime

A flying test of the new generation ballistic missile called “Agni-Prime” was successfully carried out by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and India’s Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

The test took place on Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, which is near the coast of Odisha.

The information was gathered by several range sensors put in various places, such as on two downrange ships at the terminal point. The Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Strategic Forces Command, and other top DRDO and Indian Army leaders were there to see the launch.

6. Romania Unveils World’s Most Powerful Laser

Based on the groundbreaking work of Nobel Prize winners Gerard Mourou and Donna Strickland, a study center in Romania has shown off the world’s most powerful laser.

The French company Thales runs the laser, which has the potential to change many fields, from medicine to space research.

Chirped-Pulse Amplification is changing the way laser technology is used.

The exciting new laser is based on Chirped-Pulse Amplification (CPA) technology, which was created by Mourou and Strickland.

This method makes it possible to boost laser power while keeping the strength at a safe level.

By stretching and compressing very short laser pulses, CPA achieves levels of intensity that have never been seen before. This opens the door to many uses, such as the use of advanced precision tools in eye surgery and industry.

7. DRDO Initiates Project for Test Centre in West Bengal

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has started a project in West Bengal’s Junput town to build a place where the country’s weapons can be tested.

The goal of this project is to add more operating space to Odisha’s Chandipur Integrated Test Range (ITR) so that testing activities don’t get too crowded.

Junput, which is near Chandipur and on the Bay of Bengal, was chosen because of its strategic position.

The spot, which is 8.73 acres and is close to Digha, is meant to make it easier to test weapon systems quickly, since these tests are important for defense and security.
