1. World Hemophilia Day is observed on April 17
World Hemophilia Day is observed globally on April 17 to raise awareness about hemophilia, a rare genetic blood disorder that inhibits the clotting of blood.
Hemophilic individuals lack two crucial clotting factors, Factor VIII (8) or Factor IX (9), which can lead to significant bleeding during injuries and surgeries. Although minor wounds are usually not a concern, severe hemophilia can cause internal bleeding that can damage organs and even result in death.
Establishment of World Hemophilia Day
The first-ever World Hemophilia Day was established in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) to raise awareness about hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
Theme for World Hemophilia Day 2023
The theme for World Hemophilia Day 2023 is “Access for All: Prevention of Bleeds as the Global Standard of Care.”
2. Nandini Gupta from Rajasthan Crowned Femina Miss India 2023
At an extravagant event held in Manipur’s Imphal, Nandini Gupta has been honoured with Femina Miss India 2023 title. This 19-year-old girl hails from Kota, Rajasthan and is crowned at the 59th edition of the big national beauty show.
Moreover, she will now be representing India at the International Beauty Pageant. It has been announced that Miss World Contest is going to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates the next month of May. A big bash that happened on April 15, 2023 (Saturday) witnessed Bollywood stars sparkling on the stage.
3. Farewell to Virginia T. Norwood at 96, NASA Applauded her as ‘The Mother of Landsat’
US Geological Survey announced Virginia Norwood’s demise after her daughter discovered her dead in her bed on the morning of March 27, 2023.
Virginia Tower Norwood was widely known for her invention of the Multispectral Scanner which was used in the Landsat 1 Satellite Program.
This Multispectral Scanner has been successful in locating and examining the Earth from Space for over 50 years.
This 96-year-old lady passed away in her home located in Topanga, California. Moreover, she paved the way for Aerospace as scientists were able to record images of the planet after she developed the model.
4. Aman Sehrawat clinches India’s first gold medal at Asian Wrestling Championships
Aman Sehrawat clinched India’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Sehrawat topped the podium in men’s 57 kg freestyle category on the penultimate day of the competition.
He defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov 9-4 to win the gold medal. Aman Sehrawat’s victory in Astana ensured the men’s freestyle 57kg gold medal stayed with India for the fourth year running.
5. Nepal becomes founding member of International Big Cats Alliance
Nepal has become a founding member of the International Big Cats Alliance. During the launch of the alliance under India’s initiative, Minister for Energy Shakti Bahadur Basnet handed over the letter mentioning Nepal will be associated with the alliance as a founding member to Indian Minister for Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the alliance aimed at the conservation of seven big cats namely tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma. India has assured support over five years with guaranteed funding of $100 million for the alliance.
The tiger population in Nepal reached 335 in 2022 from 121 in 2010 as a result of the government working in partnership with local communities, security agencies and conservation partners.
6. Kagiso Rabada becomes the fastest player to take 100 wickets in IPL
During a match between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans at IS Bindra Stadium, Kagiso Rabada achieved a significant milestone by taking his 100th wicket in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He became the fastest bowler to reach this milestone in terms of matches played, completing it in his 64th IPL match. Rabada, who is a right-arm pacer, surpassed Lasith Malinga, who reached the 100-wicket mark in his 70th match. The wicket that led to Rabada’s achievement was that of Wriddhiman Saha.
