Cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul receives Icon Award

Veteran Test cricket left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been honoured with the Icon Award by the Indo-Caribbean Alliance. In a ceremony held in New York recently, the 41-year-old was given the New York City-based organisation’s highest award. Chanderpaul was one of four persons honoured in the ceremony. The others receiving awards were television personality Lakshmee Singh, New York City council member Eric Ulrich and businessman Dave Kadernauth.

Chanderpaul has been one of the most prolific run-scorers in West Indies cricket, amassing 11,867 runs from 164 Tests at an average of 51. He is only second to Brian Lara in aggregate. He has not retired from international cricket.

    • Shivnarine Chanderpaul was born in Unity Village, Guyana on 16 August 1974.
    • Chanderpaul is the former captain of the West Indies cricket team. He is the first Indo-Caribbean to play 100 Tests for the West Indies.
    • Chanderpaul is well known for his unorthodox batting stance, in which he stands facing the bowler, as opposed to most batsmen who stand side-on.
    • He has scored 20,000 runs in international cricket.
    • In 2008 he was named as one of the five Cricketers of the Year by the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, and as the Player of the Year by the International Cricket Council.
