Crash Test to become mandatory for all new cars in India

The Road Transport Ministry has set a deadline for new model cars to pass frontal and side crash tests. The deadline is October 2017. As per the notification, the frontal crash tests will be at 56 kmph, while the norm set for side crash tests is 50 kmph. Once these norms are implemented, Indian cars will be at par with international test norms that make the vehicles safer for people.

The notification further adds that the front and other portions of the new cars sold after October 2017 should be be designed in such a way that pedestrians don’t receive major injury when they are hit by these vehicles.

The authorities questioned manufacturers that when they can produce and export cars which meet international safety standards, why not they make and sell cars with similar standards in Indian market?. To ensure more safety for the occupants, the road transport ministry will also set a new standard that will require the steering wheel to behave in a particular way during a frontal impact.
