Chengalikodan Banana from Kerala accorded GI status

Chengalikodan- banana variety  has been accorded Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Chennai based Central GI registry. It was first cultivated in Chengazhikode, that is why it is known as Chengazhikodan banana and now known as Chengalikodan banana.

It is found in Thrissur district of Kerala. Chengalikodan banana is known for its unique shape, size, colour and taste. These bananas is also to be given as Kazchakula in Guruvayoor temple. The GI status was announced at an event held at Peringandur Service Co-operative bank (PSC Bank).
