Commerce and Industry Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK, in New Delhi.
- During the meeting, both the leaders discussed issues of mutual interest. Both sides expressed hope to take proactive steps to deepen their ties and engagement in near future. Several issues related to bilateral trade and investment were discussed.
- Commerce Minister said that we are happy to engage with UK to talk about trade in goods & services & investments.
- Post Brexit, FTA with UK will be a fresh exercise & work on FTA with EU will continue with a re-calibrated approach the minister .
- In a meeting with Britain’s secretary of state for business, innovation and skills Sajid Javid, India’s trade minister Nirmala Sitharaman said post Brexit, it will be a “fresh exercise” for an FTA with Britain while the ongoing negotiations for an FTA with the European Union will continue with a “recalibrated approach”
- UK is India’s 12th largest trading partner and bilateral trade between the two sides contracted by 2.2% to $14 billion in 2015-16.
- UK is the third largest investor in India with $23 billion in investment between April 2000 and March 2016.
