Introduction:
The famous No. 7 shirt worn by former World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni has been the subject of a big decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI has chosen to retire his jersey number, so no other player will be able to wear it.
Before making his India start, a cricket player can usually pick the jersey number he wants to wear. The ICC rules say they can choose any number from 1 to 100, but the BCCI has told the young Indian players they can’t ask for the No.7 jersey anymore.
Another number that has been removed by the BCCI is No. 10, which was worn by Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar retired from international cricket in 2013. After that, no other Indian player wore the No. 10 jersey in international cricket until Shardul Thakur did it in 2017. This caused the BCCI to publicly retire that number.
Earlier this week, Google India honored Dhoni in a special way by celebrating what the number “seven” means. Many things were used to show how important it was: the seven countries, the seven colors of the rainbow, the seven days in a week, the seven wonders of the world, and so on. Google India shared this wise text on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, focusing on how important the number seven is.
Over the years, Dhoni has been one of India’s best white-ball leaders. During his reign, the “Men in Blue” won all of the ICC tournaments. His leadership also led to an amazing five-title win for his team, Chennai Super Kings, in the very lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).
Even though Dhoni is no longer playing for India in international cricket, he is still very involved in franchise cricket and is set to lead the Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 IPL season.
