Australian football icon Joe Marston has passed away on Sunday (29th November) morning. The 89-year-old was a pioneer for the game in this country, the first Australian to feature in an FA Cup final when he was a fan favourite at Preston North End, playing in their 1954 loss to West Bromwich Albion. He played more than 200 games for the club after his 1950 move, including 196 straight, and is one of the Socceroos’ most famous names, donning the green and gold 34 times between 1947 and 1963.
Marston, who started out with Leichhardt-Annandale, and then also played for APIA Leichhardt upon his return, is one of the country’s most formidable figures. He also managed the national side in a one-off game in 1966 against Italian side AS Roma. The A-League grand final’s player of the match medal is named in his honour.
