Australia won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 by defeating India with a decisive six-wicket margin of victory. The victory earned Australia the right to hoist the World Cup trophy.
It took Australia 42.5 overs to reach their goal, but they did so with six wickets in hand. During the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia was dealt an early setback as Mitchell Marsh (15) and Steven Smith (4) were bowled by Jaspirt Bumrah. This was followed by the fall of David Warner (7) to Mohammed Shami. The team was in a dangerous position when they had a score of 47 for 3.
However, Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out) displayed tremendous composure by building a partnership of 196 runs that changed the course of the game.
This resolute effort not only put Australia in a position of authority but also set the path for them to win their sixth World Cup victory. Australia has now triumphed at the World Cup a total of six times, having previously done so in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, and 2023.
In the earlier stage of the World Cup final, which took place on November 19 in Ahmedabad in front of nearly 130,000 people, fast bowler Mitchell Starc got three wickets to help Australia dismiss India for 240.
As can be seen, Australia is the most successful side in the annals of the ICC men’s One-Day International Cricket World Cup 2023, having won the competition a total of five times. The only other countries to have won the World Cup more than once are India and West Indies, who also have two titles apiece. The 2019 World Cup was won by England, marking the country’s very first triumph in the competition.
The Referees:
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has selected Richard Illingworth (England) and Richard Kettleborough (England) to officiate the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup 2023 final match between India and Australia, which will take place on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
