BEL CMD awarded as Most Enterprising CEO
SK Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL, has been awarded as the Most Enterprising CEO in Electronics Sector by the Indo Global Business Council (IGBC), a policy think-tank based in New Delhi. M M Joshi, Executive Director (National Marketing), BEL, received the award on behalf of CMD.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was established at Bangalore, India, by the Government of India under the Ministry of Defence in 1954 to meet the specialised electronic needs of the Indian defence services.

Telangana gets highest gallantry medals in country
Telangana State has received the highest number of gallantry medals for police personnel in the country on the eve of Independence Day. It was the only State unit to secure the President’s police medal for gallantry (PPMG). The other units to receive the award this year were Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and the Intelligence Bureau.

Edgar Lungu re-elected as President of Zambia
Zambian President Edgar Lungu narrowly won re-election on in a vote his main rival said was rigged. Hakainde Hichilema’s United Party for National Development (UPND) said it would appeal the result at the Constitutional Court, accusing election officials of fraud during the count which began after voting ended . Lungu faced a tough challenge from Hichilema in a campaign to rule over Africa’s second-largest copper producer which has suffered an economic slump due to depressed commodity prices.

PM Modi to be new brand ambassador of Incredible India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the face of Incredible India campaign of the Union Culture and Tourism Ministry. After much deliberation, a decision has been taken in this regard. Concepts for ad films have also been directed to be submitted in a week’s time. Modi will be talking about the significance of different places in those films.
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan was the last brand ambassador for this campaign. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s name was also being discussed. There were demands to appoint someone apart from Bollywood as the brand ambassador.

ICICI Bank unveils new ‘smart keys’ mobile app
ICICI Bank unveiled a payment service that uses a smartphone keyboard. Christened ‘iMobile SmartKeys’, this feature enables ‘iMobile’ users to make quick and secure payments on any mobile application including chat, messenger, email, games or search browser without having to exit their current application in their smartphone.
The ‘iMobile SmartKeys’ solution was developed by one of the winners at the ‘ICICI Appathon’. The virtual mobile app development challenge which was organised by the bank earlier this year.

Doha Bank opens first branch in Kerala
Qatar-based Doha Bank will open a state-of-the-art branch in Kochi , the only branch of a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-based bank in India. Kerela chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the branch, which will be located in the LULU International shopping Mall at Edapally, It will mainly cater to the needs of the large NRI population, both in Kerala and the Gulf.

Deutsche Bank whistle blower refuses $8 mn reward
Former Deutsche Bank risk officer has refused his share of a $16.5 million award from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for reporting misdeeds. Eric Ben-Artzi accuses the SEC of not going after executives, but hitting lower-ranked employees.
The whistleblower award was launched by SEC in 2011 to encourage people with insider knowledge to speak about financial crimes. Ben-Artzi is the first person to refuse the award.

Kerala tourism growth rate falls post liquor ban
Kerala may no longer be foreigners’ top favourite tourist destination if the figures by the tourism department are anything to go by. A recent study by the department shows a fall in the foreign tourist arrivals and all stakeholders have the state’s liquor policy to blame.
The Trade Research 2016 which compiled data from the Kerala Tourism Statistics and Economic Review of 2015, shows that the tourism growth rate fell from 8.1 percent in 2013 to 7.6 percent in 2014 and 5.9 percent in 2015.

Govt slaps $380 mn additional fine on RIL
Government has slapped an additional penalty of USD 380 million (around Rs 2,500 crore) on Reliance Industries and its partners for producing less than targeted natural gas from eastern offshore KG-D6 fields. the total penalty, which is in form of disallowing recovery of cost incurred, for missing the target in five fiscal years beginning April 1, 2010, now stands at a cumulative USD 2.76 billion.

Alibaba Group launches ‘million books’ donation drive
Online and mobile commerce major the Alibaba Group, along with Crossword and Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, has launched ‘Mission Million Books’, a pan-India initiative inviting Indian citizens to donate textbooks and educational material for the underprivileged. The collected material will be distributed to more than 2,500 educational institutions across India.

Usain Bolt wins 200m to complete hat-trick
Usain Bolt won the men’s 200 metres title at a third consecutive Olympics with a dominant performance and moved another step closer to his target of clinching three gold medals at the Rio Games here. The Jamaican legend registered a season’s besttime of 19.78 seconds at the Olympic Stadium to clinch his second gold medal of the Rio Games .

P V Sindhu wins silver in women’s singles badminton
PV Sindhu won silver medal for India at Rio Olympics 2016. India’s sensational shuttler PV Sindhu took on Spain’s Carolina Marin in the finals of women’s singles badminton. The match, as expected, proved to be a cracker of a game. Carolina Marin of Spainbeat P.V. Sindhu of India to take gold and Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara won the bronze medal.
