A R Rahman honoured with Tamil Ratna Award
Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman has been honoured by the America Tamil Sangam with its Tamil Ratna Award. Presenting the award after Rahman’s concert at the United Nations General Assembly chamber, Sangam president Prakash Swamy said the double Oscar and double Grammy winner is “an embodiment of peace, humility and charity”.

CLRI scientist P Shanmugam awarded with APJ Abdul Kalam award
Central Leather Research Institute’s Principal Scientist P Shanmugam has bagged theDr APJ Abdul Kalam Award for meritorious services in the Higher Education Department of Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa presented the award comprising a certificate, Rs five lakh cheque and eight gram gold medal during the 70th Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George.

Melbourne named world’s most liveable city
Melbourne in Australia has been named the most liveable city in the world for the sixth year in a row by The Economist. The Global Liveability Ranking 2016 hasplaced Vienna in Austria and Vancouver in Canada second and third respectively.The index, which was influenced by factors such as terrorism, has ranked Damascus in Syria the least liveable city.

Suresh Prabhu announces four new trains
Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu announced four new categories of trains, one for unreserved passengers and three for reserved ones, which will be operational in the next couple of months. “The reason behind starting new train for unreserved passengers is to ensure that those belonging to the ‘Antodya class’ (very poor people) can also travel by train A MoU was inked between city-based National Academy of the Indian Railway (NAIR) and MS University of Baroda.

Union Govt. allows Authentication using mobile connections
Telecom Sector regulator TRAI has put forth recommendations to the Department of Telecom (DoT) to allow electronic KYC of Aadhaar as one of the valid documents for getting a new mobile connection. The government issued e-KYC guidelines to make the online process of application and authentication faster and simpler for subscribers. In contrast to the existing document-based process, the move is intended to cut down time for SIM activation as KYC is verified instantly.

Kerala to get solar powered e-rickshaws
Kerala will soon have a solar-powered three-wheeler. The project, conceptualised by an entrepreneur.The solar panels fitted on the roof of the three-wheeler will provide power, stored in a battery. The battery can be charged by electricity in the absence of solar power. The vehicle is being assembled by Lifeway Solar Private Limited, a Kochi-based enterprise, owned by Georgekutty Karianappally, who said the vehicle could seat five persons.

Kerala: Pink Patrol to check crime against women
Kerala police has a new addition- The Pink Police. These women officers will move around in pink coloured cars and they will have a special badge on their shoulders. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated a new beat of city police called the Pink Police Patrol, aimed at enhancing women’s security.

Jharkhand becomes 3rd state to ratify GST Bill
The Jharkhand Assembly on Wednesday passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill and became the third state to ratify the bill after Assam and Bihar. the bill was passed unanimously in the state Assembly. “India has a tradition and culture to take taxes. The GST will end the tax discrimination and it will end the British tax system.

North Korea resumes plutonium production
North Korea confirmed the production of plutonium has been restarted in the country after speculations that it reopened its Yongbyon nuclear facility earlier this month . it will continue conducting nuclear tests till perceived threats from U.S. remain. The Yongbyon reactor was closed down in July 2007. However, North Korean government officials said in September 2015 that the plant was operational again, it was working on improving the “quality and quantity” of its nuclear weapons.

New less addictive alternative of morphine made
Scientists claim to have developed a new drug that is less risky and addictive thanmorphine, but has the same painkilling power. Initial tests on mice revealed that the new compound activates nerve cell surface receptors responsible for morphine’s painkilling effects. The compound is so new it doesn’t have a name, just a number. It’s only been tested in mice, and it needs years of additional animal studies before researchers can even start trials to see if it works safely in humans.

China launches World’s 1st Quantum communication satellite
China has successfully launched the world’s first quantum satellite which can provide “hack- proof” communications at speeds faster than light between space and the ground with significant military and commercial applications. The satellite will circle the Earth once every 90 minutes after it enters a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 kms. It is nicknamed “Micius” after Chinese philosopher and scientist who has been credited as the first one in human history conducting optical experiments.

SBI approves merger with its associate banks
State Bank of India (SBI) & its listed associate banks mainly State Bank of Travancore (SBT) and State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ) have rallied by up to 9% on the BSE after SBI approved the share swap ratios for the merger of five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank with itself. SBI CFO Anshula Kant told that eight valuation experts were appointed to arrive at the share swap and that May 16, the day the merger was first announced.

First SAARC Youth Parliamentarians Conference begins in Islamabad
The First SAARC Young Parliamentarians Conference begins in Islamabad, with the key theme of “Peace & Harmony for Development.” The National Assembly (NA) of Pakistan has taken the initiative to host the first ever conference inviting young parliamentarians from seven other SAARC member countries. For two days the young parliamentarians will share ideas, deliberate upon confronting challenges, identify avenues for cooperation and finalise strategy to implement their consensus-based ideas in future.

Malayalam screenwriter TA Razaq passes away
Award-winning Malayalam screenwriter TA Razzaq passed away in Kochi. Razzaq,age at 58s a scriptwriter his notable films include Kanakinavu, Ghazal, Perumazhakalam, Aayirathil Oruvan and Thalolam.Kanakinavu went on to win a National Award. Kanakkinavu also bagged the National Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration the same year.

Former FIFA president Joba Havelange passes away
Joao Havelange, who has died at 100, Havelange was a distinguished athlete. He played junior football with Fluminense, but it was in swimming and water polo that he made his name by representing Brazil at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and Helsinki in 1952.

World’s most photographed tigress Machli dies at 20
Machhli (T-16), the magnet for wildlife enthusiasts and one of the longest surviving tigress, passed away. The tigress had been unwell for the past few months before succumbing to her illness. Machhli was often referred to as the Queen of Ranthambore National Park’’. She gained fame for her bravery and tourist-friendly attitude.
