The Assam government has said that Ranjan Gogoi, a member of parliament and former Chief Justice of India (CJI), will receive the Assam Baibhav Award, which is the state’s greatest civilian honor.
People say that the high court decision he made as CJI helped set up the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
What Ranjan Gogoi has done
Ranjan Gogoi was the 46th Chief Justice of India. In 2019, while he was CJI, the Supreme Court made its decision on the long-awaited Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid conflict. This was the end of the controversial case that had been going on for ten years.
After that, in March 2020, President Ram Nath Kovind chose Gogoi to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. He is still a member of the Upper House of Parliament.
As the first Chief Justice of India from the Northeast, Gogoi paved the way for more people from that area to be in the highest positions of the judiciary. During his time as CJI, he improved access to and efficiency of the court system by quickly deciding pending cases.
