Argentina fought back to beat Croatia 3-2 and win the Davis Cup for the first time in a dramatic final in Zagreb. Croatia led 2-1 going into the final day and looked on course for their second title when Marin Cilic led Juan Martin del Potro by two sets to love.
- Argentina had lost in four previous finals but, roared on by a vociferous 1,500-strong group of travelling fans that included 1986 World Cup winner Diego Maradona, the visitors secured a stunning win.
- Del Potro set the victors on their way from a seemingly desperate situation at two-sets down to world number six Cilic.
Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men’s tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format.
It is described by the organisers as the “World Cup of Tennis”, and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition.
