Early Life of Anuradha Koirala
Anuradha Koirala was born (April 1949) in Okhaldhunga district of Nepal. She is a daughter of an Indian Army Officer. The former teacher changed to a crusader due to an abusive relationship. She had three miscarriages due to beating. She was suffered with pain and agony everyday.
After the relationship ended, Koirala used a portion of her salary to start a small retail shop to employ and support displaced victims of sex trafficking and domestic violence.
Maitri Nepal
Koirala realized that there is a lot more that needed to be done and that paves the way for the creation of Maitri Nepal. She formed the it with a group of professionals consisting of teachers, journalists and social workers. For more than 20 years, Maitri Nepal has been a refuge for women rescued from the brothels in India. Koirala and her organization have helped rescue and rehabilitate more than 12,000 women and girls.
The group has facilities throughout Nepal and India, but most of the rehabilitation work takes place at its main campus in Kathmandu, Nepal. Maitri Nepal provides free medical treatment, legal counselling, and formal court filings to the psychologically broken girls, who in many cases pregnant or with small children.
Anuradha Koirala was conferred with CNN Hero of 2010, Global Peace Governor Award, The United Nations Women’s Organisation Prize and Courage of Conscience Award.
