Anti-poverty pioneer wins 2015 World Food Prize

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed of Bangladesh has been named as the winner of World Food Prize 2015. He has been chosen for his role in developing the largest non-governmental organization to tackle food insecurity and poverty around the world.

Fazle Hasan founded BRAC (formerly known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) in 1972, and has since helped lift more than 150 million people out of poverty with advancements in the poultry, seed, and dairy industries in Bangladesh. BRAC has spread its approach to 10 other developing countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Liberia, Haiti, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.

BRAC has focused on ways to help increase crop yields, livestock production, and research and development on new seed varieties, while keeping sustainability, adaptability, climate change, the environment and affordability in mind.

World Food Prize
  • It is considered as the Nobel Prize in Agriculture.
  • The award comprises a prize money of US$ 250,000.
  • The Prize has been awarded annually since 1987 outstanding individuals who have made breakthrough achievements.
  • The prize was established by plant biologist Dr Norman Borlaug, father of the Green Revolution.
  • Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is the current Chairman of the World Food Prize Selection Committee. He was the first recipient of this prestigious Prize in 1987.
