AK Jha appointed as interim CMD of NTPC Limited

The GOI has appointed A.K. Jha, Director (technical) at NTPC as the interim Chairman and Managing Director of the state run power generator. NTPC’s CMD Arup Roy Choudhury’s five-year term came to an end August 31. The government decided not to extend his term for another two years, as has been the practice, and instead set up a selection committee to scout for a new head.

This will be an additional charge for Jha for the next three months. The central government has already set up a selection committee, which is headed by the power secretary, to select for a new chairman and managing director. The government has for the first time considering top executives from the private sector for the position.

Government is considering,

  • Tata Power Company’s managing director and chief executive officer Anil Sardana
  • Punj Lloyd’s CEO JP Chalasani
  • Jayadeb Nanda, chief operating officer (operations and maintenance) at Adani Power
  • NTPC’s current director finance, Kulamani Biswal

for the post of NTPC’s CMD.

  • It is an Indian Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Power.
  • In May 2010, NTPC was conferred Maharatna status by the Union Government of India.
  • NTPC operates from 55 locations in India, one location in Sri Lanka and 2 locations in Bangladesh.
