Senior revenue officer AK Jain has been appointed as the acting Chairman of the CBDT following the retirement of its Chairperson Anita Kapur. Jain, a 1978 batch Indian Revenue Services Officer, will be holding additional charge as chairperson of Central Board of Direct Taxes, the apex policy making body of theIncome Tax department. He is at present Member (Personnel and Vigilance) of CBDT, official sources said.

Meanwhile, Kapur, who retired, has been appointed an adviser on tax reforms in the Finance Ministry for six months. She will be contributing to the Ministry’s efforts for creating better taxpayer services, bringing in an improved direct taxes regime and also help in preparing the Union Budget for the next fiscal.

Apart from its Chairman, CBDT has six members and is the supreme body for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the IT Department.

What is CBDT?

• The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) provides essential inputs for policy and planning of direct taxes in India and is also responsible for administration of the direct tax laws through Income Tax Department.
• The CBDT is a statutory authority functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963.
• The CBDT Chairman and Members of CBDT are selected from Indian Revenue Service (IRS), a premier civil service of India, whose members constitute the top management of Income Tax Department.
