Ajinkya Rahane makes it to record books by taking 8 catches

India’s Ajinkya Rahane became the first fielder in Test history to take eight catches, achieving the feat in the ongoing first cricket match against Sri Lanka in Galle. Rahane caught Rangana Herath to enter the record books. The previous record was seven catches by past five international players. They are

  • Yajurvindra Singh of India
  • Greg Chappell of Australia
  • Hashan Tilakaratne of Sri Lanka
  • Stephen Flemimg of New Zealand
  • Mathew Hayden of Australia

Rahane took three catches in the first innings and five catches in the second test. Englishman Wally Hammond though holds the record for most catches — 10 — in first class cricket, having achieved the feat as a Gloucestershire fielder against Surrey in 1928. England wicketkeeper Jack Russell — in 1995 — and South African glovesman AB de Villiers — in 2013 — have 11 dismissals each in a Test match.
