Abdullahi Mire Wins 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award

As a result of his efforts to advocate for the right of displaced children to receive an education, Abdullahi Mire, a Somali refugee, has been selected as the Global Laureate of the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award for the year 2023.

Mire, who spent her childhood in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, has distributed more than one hundred thousand books to children and young people who have been uprooted from their homes in the country.

At a ceremony that will take place on December 13, 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland, he will be awarded with the certificate of achievement.

Regional Winners of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Nansen Refugee Award

For the 2023 United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Nansen Refugee Award, in addition to the Global Laureate, the following four regional winners have been selected:

  • Elizabeth Moreno Barco, a Colombian, is included in the Americas.
  • Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa Region Yemeni Al-Mashreqi is the man.
  • Myanmar’s Abdullah Habib, Sahat Zia Hero, Salim Khan, and Shahida Win are the winners of the Asia-Pacific competition.

Value of the Prize

A commemorative medal and a monetary prize of one hundred thousand United States dollars are both components of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Nansen Refugee Award.

It is anticipated that the recipient of the global prize will redirect the prize money back into the humanitarian endeavors for which they are being honored.

A lesser monetary prize will also be awarded to a number of regional winners in order to encourage them to continue their humanitarian activities.
