Abdel Fattah El-Sisi wins a huge third term as president of Egypt, with an amazing 89.6% of the vote, in an election where there were almost no real opponents.
The National Election Authority made the news on December 18. This means that El-Sisi will continue to be president even though the economy is struggling and there are problems in the region.
Election Situation and Changes in the Region
During the election, voters supported El-Sisi more because they saw him as a stabilizing force in the region, even though Egypt’s economy was still in a bad spot and there were worries about the effects of the war in Gaza.
The president’s position not only won over voters in the United States, but it also won over key Gulf and Western friends, who gave his government important financial support.
Environment Controlled for Voting
The election took place from December 10 to December 12, and 66.8% of eligible voters showed up. This is a big jump from the 41% who voted in the 2018 presidential election.
Critics, on the other hand, say that the election process wasn’t really competitive and say that the government and security services were used to keep serious candidates from running.
Charges of Manipulation
The head of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), Hossam Bahgat, said that the election process was flawed and that there were no real votes because El-Sisi ran the whole government.
People said that opposition followers were being targeted, but the National Election Authority said that these claims were not true.
Changes to the Constitution
El-Sisi, a former general, has been in charge since Mohamed Mursi, Egypt’s first freely elected leader, was removed from office in 2013.
In 2019, changes were made to the law that made the president’s term six years instead of four. This meant that El-Sisi could run for a third term.
