September 15 – Engineer’s Day

Engineers Day is celebrated on 15 September every year as a remarkable tribute to the greatest Indian Engineer Bharat Ratna Visvesvaraya. He is held in high regard as a pre-eminent engineer of India. “Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era” is the theme of Engineers Day 2015.

About Visvesvaraya:

  • His full name was Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
  • He topped the Poona College of Engineering and thereafer he was directly recruited by Government of Bombay and appointed as Assistant Engineer in Public Works Department.
  • He contibuted and Inproved India in many ways:
    •  He created automatic sluice gates which was later reused for Tigra Dam in Madhya Pradesh and KRS Dam in Karnataka.
    • In Hyderabad, he improved the drainage system.
    •  In Bombay, he introduced block system of irrigation and water weir flood gates.
    • In Bihar and Orissa, he was a part of the building railway bridges project and water supply schemes.
    • In Mysore, he supervised the construction of KRS dam.
  • Awards and Honours:
    •  Visvesvaraya was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1911.
    • In 1915, while he was the Diwan of Mysore, Visvesvaraya was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) by the British for his myriad contributions to the public good.
    •  He is a recipient of the Indian Republic’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.
    • He was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contributions to the public good.
    • Every year, on his birthday, 15 September is celebrated as Engineer’s Day in India in his memory.
    • He was the most popular person from Karnataka, in a newspaper survey conducted by Prajavani.
