1993 Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon hanged

Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, the only covict in 1993 blast, has finally been put to death in Nagpur Hail on 30th July 2015.  He moved to  the Supreme Court on 29th June 2015 hoping for a last-minute reprieve. He pleaded for stay on his execution, which has been scheduled for July 30, on the ground that Maharashtra governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao must be allowed time to decide on his mercy plea.

The SC commuted capital punishment awarded to other condemned prisoners to life imprisonment.

 

About 1993 Blasts
  1. The 1993 Bombay bombings were a series of 13 bomb explosions that took place in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 12th March 1993.
  2. This was first of its kind serial-bomb-blasts across world.
  3. The attacks were coordinated by Dawood Ibrahim.
  4. Supreme Court of India gave its judgement on 21 March 2013 after over 20 years of judicial proceedings sentencing the accused.
  5. the two main suspects in the case, Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon, have not yet been arrested or tried.
  6. At 1:30 pm a powerful car bomb exploded in the basement of the Mumbai Stock Exchange building.
  7. About 30 minutes later, another car bomb exploded in front of the Mandvi Branch Corporation Bank near Masjid.
  8. from 1:30 pm to 3:40 pm a total of 13 bombs exploded throughout Mumbai.
  9. Three hotels, the Hotel Sea Rock, Hotel Juhu Centaur, and Hotel Airport Centaur, were targeted by suitcase bombs left in rooms booked by the perpetrators. 
About Yukub Memon
  1. Yakub Abdul Razak Memon (30 July 1962 – 30 July 2015) was an Indian terrorist.
  2. He was a Chartered Accountant.
  3. Yakub Memon was the brother of one of the prime suspects in the bombings, Tiger Memon.
  4. he was executed by hanging on 30 July 2015 in Nagpur jail.
  5. According to Indian authorities, Memon financially assisted his brother Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim in planning and executing the bombings.
  6. Memon was originally held at Yerwada Central Jail, and was transferred to Nagpur Central Jail in August 2007.
  7. While in prison, he has studied at Indira Gandhi National Open Universityand earned two master’s degrees. The first, in 2013, in English literature and the second degree, in 2014, in political science.
  8. Memon was executed by hanging in Nagpur Central Jail at around 6:30 AM IST on 30 July 2015.
