  1. Venkaiah Naidu Laid Foundation of Country’s First ‘Green-Field’ Smart City

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday asked the people to be prepared for higher taxes or user charges in order to realize the dream of smart cities and upgraded, modern infrastructure in the existing ones.

Naidu, on the second day of his maiden Jharkhand tour after becoming Vice President, was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the first and only greenfield smart city project, in Ranchi.

  1. Maha to launch single helpline number for emergency services

A single emergency number — 112 — that will integrate services of police, fire brigade and medical help, is likely to be a reality in the state. The home department will roll out the services, which will reduce the response time and also introduce dedicated apps and SMS services.

In accordance with the central government’s directive, the state cabinet approved a Rs429 crore plan a few weeks ago to roll out the service in 10 big cities and later in all the districts.

  1. September 10, 2017: World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10 each year to promote worldwide action to prevent suicides. Various events and activities are held during this occasion to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death.

World Suicide Prevention Day gives organizations, government agencies and individuals a chance to promote awareness about suicide, mental illnesses associated with suicide, as well as suicide prevention. Organizations such as the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and World Health Organization (WHO) play a key role in promoting this event.

  1. Mumbai doctors launch free app to prevent suicides

Mumbai doctors launched a free mobile application, which will direct people in emotional distress to a nearest helpline centre.

The application called ‘emotional support helpline directory’ available on Playstore was launched to mark the World Health Organisation declared World Suicide Prevention Day, which raises awareness about how suicides are preventable.

It features contact information of more than 50 suicide prevention helplines numbers operating across India and displays the closest helpline near the user.

  1. PNB, BSNL Join Hands for Mobile Wallet Speedpay Rollout

Punjab National Bank and state-run firm BSNL today teamed up to roll out open mobile wallet Speedpay across 10 states in the country.

PNBs Speedway wallet will operate like any other mobile wallet for paying bills, recharging phone besides its users will be able to deposit and withdraw money from authorised retail outlets.

  1. SEBI Advisory Committee To Discuss Trading Hours Extension

An advisory committee of market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is likely to discuss a proposal for extending stock market trading hours, even as several brokers feel any such move would increase cost and logistics burden for them.

The stock market in India currently opens at 9 am and closes at 3.30 pm, but there is a view—including among stock exchanges—that the trade hours could be extended till up to 7.30 pm to better align domestic trading with global markets.

  1. World’s oldest steam engine finishes heritage run in Chennai

The world’s oldest working steam engine, pulling a single coach, on Sunday successfully completed a “heritage run” between two railway stations, drawing huge crowds along the route.

The Heritage Special Locomotive EIR-21 was run from the Egmore to Kodambakkam railway stations in the city, covering two stations in between. It drew huge crowds along the route.

  1. Shaheen VI: China-Pakistan Air Forces Joint Exercise

Pakistan Air Force and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Air Force (PLAAF) began joint training exercises dubbed “Shaheen VI” in China. The exercises began on Thursday and will run until September 27.

According to Xinhua, China’s state news agency, a spokesperson for the PLAAF noted that China had sent a wide range of aerial assets and troops, including Shenyang J-11 twin-engine multirole fighters, Xian JH-7 fighter-bombers, KJ-200 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft, and surface-to-air missile crews and radar operators.

  1. Martina Hingis Wins 25th Grand Slam Title with Doubles Victory

Martina Hingis has secured her 25th career Grand Slam title even as she, along with partner Chan Yung-Jan, won the US Open women’s doubles title 6-3 6-2 against Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova.

Hingis and Chan were in total control of the match since the beginning, never facing a break point, and disposed of the Czech team of Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova in straight sets – 6-3, 6-2 – at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

  1. Sloane Stephens wins US open Women’s Singles Title

American Sloane Stephens lifted theUS Open women’s singles title. She ranked 83rd completed a spectacular return from injury to beat 15th seed Keys 6-3, 6-0 in the finals.

She started the tournament when she was ranked in the 900s and has now ended it as the US Open Champion.

  1. Nadal beats Anderson to win third US Open title

Spain’s Rafael Nadal defeated Kevin Anderson from South Africa 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to win his third US Open title.

The victory gave the world number one the 16th Grand Slam title. Only his longtime rival Roger Federer has more, with 19.

Nadal also won the French Open in June and has collected two major titles in the same year for the first time since 2013, when he won the last of his two US Open crowns.
