  1. Prestigious APQN Quality Award to NAAC

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India has received prestigious International Award of Asia Pacific Quality Network (APQN) titled “APQN Quality Award 2017 for International Co-operation in Quality Assurance.”

APQN Quality Award are among the most prestigious International Awards in quality assurance of higher education.

Asia Pacific Quality Register (APQR) and International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE) highlighting the acclaimed status of NAAC in International QA circle.

  1. Sanjiv Singh appointed as new chairman of Indian Oil Corporation

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has appointed Sanjiv Singh as the new chairman of the company with immediate effect.

Singh was earlier a director of Refineries at IOCL. Singh will be replacing B Ashok, who superannuated from the services of the company on May 31 and ceased to be the chairman of the company from June 1.

  1. RBI appoints S Ganesh Kumar as new Executive Director

The Reserve Bank of India has announced appointment of S Ganesh Kumar as Executive Director (ED). S Ganesh Kumar, will succeed Chandan Sinha.

As Executive Director, Ganesh Kumar will look after Department of Information Technology, Department of Payment and Settlement Systems and Department of External Investments and Operations.

  1. Ramachandra Guha resigns from SC-appointed BCCI admin panel

Eminent historian Ramachandra Guha was appointed in the Supreme Court’s panel to implement the Lodha committee recommendations to overhaul the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

A vacation bench of Justices MM Shantanagoudar and Deepak Gupta was informed by Guha’s counsel that he had tendered his resignation on 28 May to Vinod Rai, Chairman of the Committee of Administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

  1. IIT Kharagpur develops new technology to manufacture biofuel

Researchers at IIT – Kharagpur have developed a technology that has the potential to make biofuel manufacturing cheaper, quicker and free of pollution. The ‘soil-to-soil’ manufacturing technology developed at the P.K. Sinha Centre for Bioenergy at IIT – Kharagpur is in the process of being patented.

Researchers say bioethanol can be produced from various naturally available ligno-cellulosic components, but to do so the biomass needs to be treated chemically and in some cases physico-chemically. Because of chemical treatment, the process contributes to polluting the environment.

  1. India’s first metro system to span land and water in Kochi

The Kochi Metro will begin operations on a stretch between Aluva and Palarivattom stations, nearly half the total length planned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take a break from his slew of international trips to inaugurate the service.

By 2019 the railway line will connect to a Water Metro– India’s first – which, with a fleet of 78 speedboats and 16 jetties, will provide the area’s state-run ferry service with much-needed upgrade. Also, getting an upgrade is Kochi’s rickety bus network.

  1. Arun Jaitley inaugurates Telangana solar plant

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated a grid-connected solar power plant of 16 MW capacity at the Ordinance Factory in Telangana’s Medak. He also dedicated a 9 MW capacity windmill project installed at Dammur in Karnataka at a cost of Rs 53 crore by BEML, a defence PSU. Jaitley dedicated both the two projects through video- link at an event.

The solar power plant at Medak has been set up at a cost of Rs 105 crore by Bharat Electronics Limited. The plant has been set up for captive consumption of the factory, on 80 acres of spare land available with it, making it self-sufficient not only for its power requirement but also reduced carbon footprint.

  1. India, Russia ink pact for nuclear power units in Tamil Nadu

India and Russia have signed the pact for setting up the last two units of the Kundankulam nuclear power plant with Moscow’s help in Tamil Nadu after overcoming initial hurdles to finalise the strategic deal. The General Framework Agreement (GFA) and Credit protocol for Units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam nuclear plant are seen as a major outcome of the annual summit talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  1. June 1, 2017: World Milk day

World Milk Day is an initiative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, to celebrate the contribution of the dairy industry around the globe on 1st June.

The Day provides an opportunity to focus attention on milk and to publicize activities connected with milk and the milk industry. The fact that many countries choose to do this on the same day lends additional importance to individual national celebrations and shows that milk is a global food. The first World Milk Day was held in 2001.

  1. India ranked 141 in Global Peace Index, Iceland most peaceful

India was ranked as low as 141 out of 163 countries researched on a Global Peace Index — making it less peaceful than countries such as Burundi, Serbia and Burkina Faso — with violence taking a USD 680-billion (Rs 4,521,078 crore) toll on its economy in 2015.

Iceland was ranked as the world’s most peaceful country, followed by Denmark and Austria.

In a ranking of 163 countries, compiled by the global think tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Syria has been named as the least peaceful, followed by South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.

  1. China beats India to become world’s fastest-growing economy

India’s economic growth slowed for the fourth consecutive quarter in the three months that ended in March, losing out the fastest-growing economy tag to China. The effect of demonetization on key sectors such as housing, finance, and others are now being felt. However, it’s a minor hiccup and the advent of monsoon and GST should bring things back on track.

  1. Kannada film producer Parvathamma Rajkumar passes away

Kannada film producer Parvathamma Rajkumar, wife of the late Kannada superstar Rajkumar, passed away. She was 78. Parvathamma was the only woman producer-distributor-exhibitor of Kannada films. Vajreshwari Combines and Poornima Enteprises, started by her, have produced many of the films starring her husband Rajkumar and sons Shivarajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkmar and Puneet Rajkumar.
