Sushil Chandra appointed as new chief of CBDT

Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Sushil Chandra appointed chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body for the income tax department. He will replace Rani Singh Nair, who retires this month-end. Chandra, a 1980 batch officer of Indian revenue service (income tax cadre), is currently member (Investigation) of the CBDT.

Nobel Peace Prize for Colombia’s President Juna manuel santos

The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2016 for negotiating a peace treaty with the guerillas in the country to end 52 years of conflict with a leftist rebel group, the longest-running war in the Americas, despite the unsuccessful referendum held over the deal. The decision to give the prize to the Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, may revive hopes for the agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, with whom the country has been waging the last major guerrilla struggle in Latin America.

Facebook named ‘Top Growing Brand’ of 2016

Social networking giant Facebook has been named 2016’s ‘Top Growing Brand’ by brand consultancy Interbrand, with a 48% year-on-year increase in its brand value to $32.59 billion. E-commerce major Amazon and toy company Lego were ranked second and third respectively. Notably, Facebook was also ranked 15 on Interbrand’s 2016 list of ‘Best Global Brands’.

Jean pierre sauvage, J fraser and Bernard L Feringa win 2016 Nobel prize in Chemistry

Three scientists won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for developing the world’s smallest machines, work that could revolutionize computer technology and lead to a new type of battery.  Frenchman Jean-Pierre Sauvage, British-born Fraser Stoddart and Dutch scientist Bernard “Ben” Feringa share the 8 million kronor ($930,000) prize for the “design and synthesis of molecular machines.

Molecular machines “will most likely be used in the development of things such as new materials, sensors and energy storage systems.” Stoddart has already developed a molecule-based computer chip with 20 kB memory.

Union Cabinet approves MoU between India and European Union on water cooperation

The Union Cabinet gave its approval for the signing of MoU between India and European Union in the field of water resources. The MoU envisages strengthening the technological, scientific and management capabilities of India and the European Union in the field of water management on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit.

Union Cabinet Approves MoU between India and AARDO

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the African Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) for capacity building programmes in the field of rural development.

 Reliance Infra sells transmission business to Adani

Adani Transmission is now the largest private operator of power transmission networks in the country after buying the transmission assets of Reliance Infrastructure (R-Infra). The Anil Ambani-promoted R-Infra has signed a binding agreement with Adani Transmission to sell its power transmission business and use the proceeds to pare its debt.

Palmyra temple destroyed by ISIS recreated in Rome

A UNESCO-sponsored exhibition featuring the replicas of ancient works from Iraq and Syria that were destroyed by the Islamic State was launched in Rome. It features a reconstruction of the Temple of Bel at Palmyra, a room of the State Archives of Ebla and the winged bull of Nimrud. The works were reconstructed using robots and 3D printers. The project was overseen by archaeologists and art historians.
