India ranked 77 in disaster risk index
India has been ranked 77th on the World Risk Index, topped by Island state of Vanuatu. The World Risk Report 2016, published by the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Bundnis Entwicklung Hilft ,analyses the role that infrastructure plays in shaping a country’s disaster risk.
The Index, calculated by the University of Stuttgart, ranks 171 countriesaccording to their risk of becoming a victim of a disaster as a result of natural hazards such as floods, cyclones, or earthquakes.

Athlete Lalita Babar, chessplayer Gagare to get SJAM awards
Grandmaster Shardul Gagare, athlete Lalita Babar and India batsman Ajinkya Rahane have been named recipients of the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai’s (SJAM) Golden Jubilee Annual Awards 2016. Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan will present the trophies and certificates to all the 17 award recipients during a function.

World Bank sanctions Rs 980 cr for Brahmaputra dredging
The World Bank has sanctioned Rs.980 crore to dredge the Brahmaputra as an initiative to develop waterways to Bangladesh and to other South East Asian countries in a bid to boost trade and industry in the Northeast.
Opening up of the Brahmaputra waterways for trade will lead to a reduction in the cost of transportation of goods and will ultimately result in Assam becoming a export hub for the South East Asian countries.

Bengaluru to host 2017 Bharatiya Pravasi Divas
The IT-BT capital of the country, Bengaluru, will host the 2017 Bharatiya Pravasi Divas. Scheduled to take place on February 7, 8 and 9 of 2017, the Ministry of External Affairs held a meeting with Tourism Minister R V Deshpande for a preliminiary round of talks.
This will be the 15th Bharatiya Pravasi Divas, meant to interact with representatives of the 30 million NRIs and PIOs around the world.

India’s first textile university to come up at Surat
Gujarat government is planning to set up India’s first textile university at Surat with an investment of about Rs 800 crore – Rs 900 crore. The textile industry will support the government in the endeavour.The state government will fund about Rs 800-900 crore for the university, which is expected to get operational in the next one and a half years.
The aim of the university is to provide all kind of support including technology, research and development (R&D), skilled manpower etc.

Himachal Health Minister launches ambulance mobile app
Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur launched a mobile app for availing immediate and easy access to ambulances in the state. The app named‘108 HP’ can be downloaded on any smartphone.
The app will make the access to the National Ambulance Service (NAS) much faster and does not require sharing of information such as name and location. Himachal has become the first state in India to launch any such app.

Nagaland becomes eighth State to pass GST bill
The Nagaland Legislative Assembly has ratified the Goods and Service Tax (GST) Constitution Amendment Bill.The bill was endorsed by the House by a voice vote following a brief discussion. Introducing the bill, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiyanilie Peseyie said the revenue of the state would go up as tax evasion would be checked due to transparency and broadening of tax base.

22nd Delhi Book Fair begins
The 22nd edition of the Delhi Book Fair this year aims to highlight initiatives undertaken by the central government for its ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan’ flagship programme to inculcate better reading habits among the younger generation. The 9-day-long fair organised by Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in association with Federation of Indian Publishers is scheduled to be held between August 27 and September 4 at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.

ISRO successfully test-fires scramjet engine
The Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV), a sounding rocket (research rocket) with a solid booster carrying advanced scramjet engines, was successfully flight-tested from the launch pad of the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre, also known as Sriharikota Range (SHAR), at Sriharikota.
This first experimental mission of Indian Space Research Organisation is aimed at the realisation of an Air Breathing Propulsion System which uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen from the atmosphere air as the oxidiser.

Karnataka Bank launches KBL-SMARTz app based on UPI platform
Karnataka Bank has launched “KBL-SMARTz,” a mobile application built on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), umbrella organization for all retail payments system in India.
UPI is new initiative from NPCI in digital payments ecosystem. Interface is designed to enable customers across UPI member banks to pay and collect money from their smartphones without entering any bank account information.

Indian Super League season 3 to begin from October 1
Season-3 of the Indian Super League (ISL) football would be held from October 1 to December 18, with the opening game scheduled in Guwahati and the venues of the two-legged semi-finals to be decided later.
League’s promoters, Football Sports Development Ltd, announced the ISL fixtures featuring 61 games spread across 79 days played in a home-away league format, to be followed by the semi-finals and the final.

Tillakaratne Dilshan to retire after Australia series
Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka batsman, will retire from international cricket after the second Twenty20 International against Australia. Dilshan won’t be available to play the final two One-Day International matches of the ongoing series since he has opted to quit 50-overs cricket on Sunday (August 28) after the third ODI.
The veteran cricketer, who started his career as a middle-order batsman, made his international debut in a Test match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in 1999.
