RBI slaps penalty on BoB, HDFC Bank & PNB
The Reserve Bank of India slapped penalties ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore on Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, and Punjab National Bank over the issue of advance import remittances.
On Bank of Baroda , the RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on it. This follows the banking regulator finding weaknesses and failures in internal control mechanisms in respect of certain anti-money laundering provisions.

Lok Sabha passes Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016
The Lok Sabha has passed the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The Bill seeks to set up six new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Tirupati, Palakkad, Goa, Dharwad, Bhilai, and Jammu. It also seeks to bring the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad within the ambit of the Act. All these institutions will be declared as institutions of national importance.
Hinduja National Power commissions 1,040 MW thermal power project in Visakhapatnam
Hinduja National Power Corporation Limited (HNPCL), part of the Hinduja Group, commissioned its 1,040 Mw Power project at Visakhapatnam. The power plant consists of two units of 520 Mw each.
According to Ashok Puri, Managing Director, HNPCL, Unit-1 started supplying power to the grid in January 2016, and that currently both units are operational. He said the entire power generated by the project is being sold to state-owned southern and eastern power distribution companies of Andhra Pradesh.

7th Pay Commission to be implemented from August
The government notified implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations and directed government departments to commence fixing salaries to be paid to individual employees in August .
In a move that will cheer millions of central government employees and likely spur demand for consumer durables , the government has decided to pay them seven months’ arrears at one go with their August salary.

4th Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival 2016 begins in Guwahati
The much anticipated 4th edition of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) was inaugurated in a grand manner at ITA Machkhowa, Guwahati , K V Eapen, Additional Chief Secretary, Planning and Development, was the Guest of Honour for the programme this year. Renowned filmmaker Prakash Jha and sound designer Amrit Pritam were also present as Special Guests.

Ericsson CEO Vestberg steps down
Swedish mobile telecoms gear maker Ericsson’s Chief Executive Hans Vestberg has stepped down with immediate effect. Vestberg, who has been CEO since 2010, has come under fire in recent months, with Swedish media questioning his leadership and pay, particularly after weak quarterly results in April sent its share price down 15 percent in a single day.

US postal service creates history; earns Guinness tag for sending postage stamp to Pluto
With the help of NASA, US postal service made history after a stamp was send to Pluto which they placed on New Horizons spacecraft of the American space agency. The stamp travelled a mind-blowing 5,250,843,896 km becoming the stamp to travel longest distance ever in history.
After the arrival of spacecraft at Pluto on 14 July 2015, the stamp earned a Guinness World records title for the farthest distance travelled by a postage stamp. New Horizons spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA, on 19 January 2006.

Verizon set to announce USD 5 bn deal to buy Yahoo
Verizon Communications Inc would buy Yahoo Inc’s core internet properties for $4.83 billion in cash to expand its digital advertising and media business, ending a lengthy sale process for the fading Web pioneer.
The purchase will boost Verizon’s AOL internet business, which it bought last year for $4.4 billion, as it gains access to Yahoo’s ad technology tools, BrightRoll and Flurry, and search, mail and messenger assets.
