Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy has sworn in as the acting Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Itanagar. With this he becomes 18th Governor to be sworn in as Governor of this Himalayan State. He has been given the additional charge of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. With this, Mr.Roy will discharge the function of the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh during the absence on leave of Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa.
Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh had administered the oath of office to Tathagata Roy as per the provisions of Article 159 of Constitution of India.
- Assembly Speaker Wangki Lowang, Chief Minister Kalikho Pul and several ministers were present at Raj Bhavan, when Guwahati High Court Chief Justice Ajit Singh administered Roy the oath of office.
- Besides Roy, Dr. Joram Begi was also sworn-in as the Chief Information Officer of Arunachal Pradesh. The oath to the Chief Information Officer was administered by Tathagata Roy.
About Tathagata Roy
- Tathagata Roy is an Indian politician, engineer and author. He was born on 14 September 1945 in Kolkata
- He was president of the West Bengal state unit of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2002 till 2006.
- He studied Civil Engineering in Bengal Engineering College Sibpur (currently Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur), when it was affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Later he joined Indian Railways Service of Engineers.
- He is also a writer and has written both in English and in his native Bengali language.
Constitutional provisions of Governor
Article 159
According to this article 159 oath or affirmation by governor and every person discharging the function of the governor shall , before entering upon the office ,make and subscribe in the presence of the chief justice of high court exercising jurisdiction in the relation to the state .
Article 153
Article 153 says that there shall be Governor for each state. The 7th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1956 has facilitated the appointment of the same person as a governor for two or more states.
