Sundar Pichai gets Great Immigrants award in USA
Four Indian-Americans, including Google CEO Sunder Pichai, are among 42 US nationals to be honoured with this year’s prestigious “Great Immigrants: The Pride of America” award for their inspiring professional accomplishments. The other three Indian-Americans are Hari Sreenivasan, anchor and senior correspondent, PBS NewsHour, Vikram Malhotra Chairman of the Americas, McKinsey & Company and Bharati Mukherjee National, Book Critics Circle Award-winning author.

SBI to offer banking services on Facebook, Twitter
The country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI), launched three digital initiatives and indicated that it may have to prune its branch network once its associates are merged.
SBI made its debut on social media banking by launching its platform called “Mingle” through which its customers can transact using Facebook and Twitter. The customers have to register for this service through a simple one-time registration process using either their account number or their ATM/debit card details. For a start, customers can view their account statements and their balance on Twitter. On Facebook, customers can also do fund transfers.

India’s first integrated Defence Communication Network launched
India’s first integrated defence communication network was launched in New Delhi enabling the army, air force, navy and the Special Forces Command to share situational awareness for a faster decision-making process. The Defence Communication Network (DCN), a strategic, highly secure and scalable system, has a pan-India reach — from Ladakh to the North East to island territories.

World Bank commits $1bn for India solar projects
The World Bank Group signed an agreement with the International Solar Alliance (ISA), consisting of 121 countries, led by India. It has committed to provide $1 billion support to Indian solar energy projects. The World Bank-supported projects include solar rooftop technology, infrastructure for solar parks, bringing innovative solar and hybrid technologies to market and transmission lines for solar-rich states.

Kerala government to ban e-cigarettes
Kerala government has decided to ban ‘electronic cigarette’ in view of studies claiming that its use can cause various health issues, including cancer and heart ailments. State Health Minister KK Shylaja has directed the additional chief secretary (health) to issue an order banning the production, sale and advertisement of ‘electronic cigarette’ alias ‘e-cigarette’. E-cigarettes are handy devices that emit doses of vaporised nicotine.

India abstains from voting on LGBT rights at UN
The Ministry of External Affairs said India abstained from the LGBT vote in the United Nations as the case is subjudice and the Supreme Court is yet to pronounce its verdict. India’s response on the LGBT vote in the UN comes hours after LGBT community members expressed disappointment over its move to help protect the rights of homosexuals and transgenders worldwide. LGBT activists in India criticised the government for its silence, saying it reflected their intolerance and homophobia.

Indigenously built Tejas inducted into IAF
The Indian Air Force has inducted the first squadron of the indigenously made Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas into its fleet. An induction ceremony to induct two Tejas aircrafts was held at the Aircraft Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in Bengaluru. The crew members of the first squadron of Tejas, a multi-role supersonic single-engine aircraft designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Iceland named world’s safest vacation spot
Iceland has been named as the world’s safest vacation spot. Based on the recently released Global Peace Index (GPI) ranking, the Institute for Economics and Peace charted the world’s safest destinations. Iceland also called the Republic of Iceland, is a Nordic island country situated between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The country has a population of 332,529 and covers an area of 103,000 km2, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Its capital and the largest city is Reykjavik.

BRICS Youth Summit begins in Guwahati
A Youth Summit for the BRICS countries has began in Guwahati with the theme ‘Youth as bridge for Intra-BRICS Exchanges‘. The subjects to be covered are skill development and entrepreneurship, social inclusion, youth volunteerism and youth participation in governance. The programme for the summit also includes thematic debates, cultural events, site-visits and interactive sessions with local youth. The Youth Summit would also be an occasion to introduce India’s North-East to BRICS youth.

Argentina women’s team wins 2016 Champions Trophy title of Hockey
The Argentina women’s team has claimed a record seventh Champions Trophy title with a 2-1 win over reigning World and Olympic champions, the Netherlands, in the final at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. In the bronze medal game, USA battled to a shootout victory over Australia, giving the team a first Champions Trophy medal since wining bronze at the 1995 event in Mar del Plata, Argentina. With this victory, Argentina women’s team has won the Champions Trophy title of Hockey for record seventh time. Earlier they had won it in 2001, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

OBITUARY
Eminent Marathi literary scholar RC Dhere passes away
Eminent Marathi writer RC Dhere, known for his exhaustive research in folk literature and bhakti tradition of Maharashtra, passed away following prolonged illness at the age of 86. Dhere, a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Award in 1987 for his book ‘Sri Vitthal- A Mahasamanvayak (Lord Vitthal- A great coordinator)’, carved a niche for himself by tracing the roots of Maharashtra’s folk traditions and literature with an extensive research that highlighted the influence of saints on Maharashtrian ethos.
