Ridley Scott to receive American Cinematheque Award
Director Ridley Scott will be honored with the 30th American Cinematheque award during the organization’s annual benefit gala October 14 at the Beverly Hilton. The event for the iconic director of films including Alien, Blade Runnerand most recently last year’s commercial and awards-garnering sci-fi pic The Martian will include in-person tributes from some of Scott’s colleagues and friends.

UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon honoured with Russia’s Order of Friendship
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been honored with Russia’s Order of Friendship. The respective decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin was published on the Russian official legal information website. The officially published decree said that the decoration was awarded to Ban for special merits in strengthening peace, friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between peoples.

China disapproves anti-dumping probe on steel
China has expressed serious concern over India initiating an anti-dumping probe against Chinese steel products as it sought a ‘fair’ and ‘transparent’ investigation in line with WTO rules. China is highly concerned by Indian trade remedy measures against Chinese steel products.
The ministry in a statement said excess steel production capacity is a global challenge and countries should unite to face up to it, rather than abuse trade remedy measures, adding that China and India should “properly handle trade frictions.” The ministry said it hoped the Indian government could conduct a fair and transparent investigation in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, and refrain from trade remedy measures.

Indian in TIME ‘millennials changing world’ list
A 30-year old Indian entrepreneur has been named by Time magazine to its 2016 list of “10 millennials who are changing the world” for building a phone which can help people to interact and access critical services by communicating in their native languages. Umesh Sachdev has been named by Time to its 2016 list of “10 millennials who are changing the world” for his work on “building a phone that can understand almost any language”.

Maharashtra to celebrate 21st of each month as Yoga Day
The Maharashtra government has decided to celebrate the 21st day of every month as Yoga Day across all schools, colleges and universities in the State. State School and Higher Education minister Vinod Tawde had recently held a meeting with yoga institutions like Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Art of Living, Ramdev Baba’s Patanjali Yog Samiti, Samarth Vyayam Mandir Bharat Swabhiman Nyas and others to moot various ways to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 on a grand scale at district levels.

Three to Four lakh enslaved in Eritrea over 25 years: UN
The head of a U.N. human rights inquiry into Eritrea said an estimated 300,000-400,000 people had been enslaved over the past 25 years in Eritrea’s system of indefinite “national service”. He also said he believed Eritrea was still operating a shoot-to-kill policy on its borders to stop people fleeing from the country, many of them heading to Europe as refugees.

Pakistan tops in 2016 Malware Infection Index
At least four out of ten computers in Asia-Pacific countries are likely to be infected with malware, a study by Microsoft has found. While Pakistan tops the list of countries figuring in the Malware Infection Index 2016, India ranks 8th on the list. The index identifies the key malware threats in the region and ranks markets in Asia-Pacific according to how much they are affected.

NATO launches biggest ever Joint Military Exercise Anaconda-16 in Poland
A large-scale military training exercise involving more than 20 NATO and partner countries has kicked off in Poland, part of efforts to reassure east European nations rattled by Russia’s actions in nearby Ukraine.
For more than 10 days, 30,000 troops backed by large numbers of vehicles, aircraft and ships will be deployed in one of the biggest exercises on NATO’s eastern flank since the end of the Cold War, a move likely to put further strain on the already-tense relations between the Kremlin and the West.

WHO declares Liberia Ebola-free for fourth time
The WHO has declared that Liberia has reached the end of active Ebola virus transmission. This is fourth such declaration from one of the west African countries at the epicenter of the world’s worst outbreak of the disease. The declaration means it has been 42 days since the last confirmed patient tested negative for a second time for the disease.

India-US inked 8 MoUs to bolster economic growth & sustainable development
India and the United States (US) have signed/finalized eight agreements/ Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) in various fields including exchange of Terrorist Screening Information, cooperation on Energy Security, Clean Energy and Climate Change among others. The agreements were inked after meet of Prime Minster Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama in the White House.

US firm to build 6 nuclear reactors in India
The U.S. and India agreed to move ahead with the construction of six nuclear reactors in India by an American company, the first such move since the countries signed a landmark civil nuclear deal in 2008. The breakthrough capped a wide-ranging White House meeting between President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who are seeking closer cooperation as Washington wants to boost New Delhi’s role in counterbalancing China.

Eden Gardens to host India’s first day-night Test
The venerable Eden Gardens ground will host the first ever day-night Test in the country when India take on New Zealand later this year. The Tour Programme and Fixtures Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the fixture stating that New Zealand will play three Test matches and five One-Day Internationals. The New Zealand series will be followed by five Test matches, three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals against England. In total India will be playing 13 Tests in the upcoming season.

International paralympics body lifts Indian athletes ban
In a huge relief to several Indian para-athletes who have qualified for Rio Paralympics, the world governing body IPC has announced temporary lifting of suspension imposed on the national body last year so that Indians can take part under the tri-colour in the showpiece event.
International Paralympic Committee, on May 31, decided to lift the ban on the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) with the sole purpose of allowing para-athletes of the country to compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games under the tri-colour. Till now, a record number of 20 Indian para-athletes have qualified for the Rio Paralympics to be held from September 7 to 18.
