Congress Veterans Sheila Kaul Dies at 100

Sheila Kaul, a sister-in-law of Jawaharlal Nehru and oldest surviving former parliamentarian, has died. She was 101 years old. She died on 13th June 2015 at her daughters residence. Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed deep sorrow at the passing away of Kaul. Extending condolences to her friends and family, Gandhi eulogized her role as an MP, Union minister and governor in public life extending over five decades.

  1. She was a social democratic leader of the Indian National Congress.
  2. She was the oldest living former member of parliament in India at the time of her death.
  3. Kaul was born on February 7, 1915.
  4. She was an arts graduate from Lahore Women’s College and had a degree in teaching from Sir Ganga Ram Training College, Lahore.
  5. She was married to renowned botanist Kailash Nath Kaul.
  6. Kaul is survived by two sons and a daughter Deepa Kaul.
