Google launches public flood alerts in India

Google has introduced a new flood alerts feature in India as a part of its efforts to make critical information around natural disasters more accessible to everyone. Available via Google Public Alerts platform, the alerts will be displayed on Google apps such as Google web search, Google Maps and Google Now cards. Clicking on the alert, users will be provided with details about hazards, expected timeline, maps and a few tips to stay safe.

Google will use data provided by the Central Water Commission (CWC), allowing users to find flood alerts along with information on river level for over 170 areas under CWC observation stations.

In addition to the flood alerts, Google is continuously working on improvements for Google Crisis Response to increase the accessibility of important information concerning natural disasters. Through Public Alerts, in addition to flood alerts for India, the company is able to disseminate information such as weather reports, earthquake alerts and public safety announcements that will allow users to make better decisions for their own sake.
